Chapter 12 - Grandpa’s Last Trap

Caleb grabbed Elaine and pressed the gun against her neck.

“Back off!”

Police froze.

The dock swayed beneath us.

I kept my hands visible.

“You’re done, Caleb.”

“Not if I still have leverage.”

“You don’t.”

Elaine looked at him with exhausted contempt.

“Arthur knew you’d try exactly this.”

“Shut up.”

“The unauthorized proxy triggered an automatic transfer of disputed shares into an independent charitable foundation. You can’t steal control anymore.”

Caleb’s face drained of color.

Years of plotting had collapsed because Grandpa understood greedy people better than they understood themselves.

Caleb tightened his grip on Elaine.

“Then you’re both useless.”

That sentence was the mistake.

He looked toward the police for half a second.

Elaine slammed her heel into his shin.

I drove my shoulder into his arm.

The gun fired into the water.

Reed and two officers reached us before he could recover.

Caleb went down screaming legal threats.

For once, nobody cared that he was a lawyer.

Elaine hugged me after paramedics checked her.

“Your grandfather loved you,” she said.

I looked away.

“He didn’t trust me with the company.”

“He trusted you with something harder.”

“What?”

“Choosing what kind of family comes next.”

Back at the hospital, Maya explained the dead-hand clause.

The company’s controlling shares would move into a foundation for seven years. Nora would chair the oversight board. Avery would remain the ultimate beneficiary, but no Cole family member—including me—could sell, pledge, borrow against, or transfer her interest.

Dad had spent years trying to steal a thing he could never legally touch.

Madison asked to see Nora.

I told Nora she didn’t have to.

“I know.”

She agreed anyway.

Madison entered in plain clothes with an officer outside the door.

She looked smaller than she had in our living room.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Nora stared at her.

“For what part?”

Madison swallowed.

“The threats.”

“And?”

“The papers.”

“And?”

“The way I hit you.”

Nora’s eyes did not soften.

“You didn’t lose your temper, Madison. You came to my home with forged documents and backup. You planned it.”

Madison started crying.

“I thought you were taking Ethan away from us.”

Nora leaned forward.

“Ethan was never property.”

Madison looked at me.

For once, I didn’t rescue her from silence.

Then she said, “There’s one more thing you need to know.”

May you like

She turned to me.

“Dad has another account in your name.”
