Chapter 9 - The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

The forged agreement transferred my personal shares in Cole Biomedical to a holding company called Meridian Ridge.
I owned only nine percent.
But combined with the shares Caleb had already moved through shell entities, it was enough to challenge Avery’s control block in court.
Maya read the document twice.
“This was the backup plan.”
“If Nora wouldn’t sign, they’d use me.”
“Not use you,” she said. “Become you.”
Federal investigators joined the case that afternoon.
Caleb’s fraud was no longer a family mess. It touched securities filings, banks, interstate transfers, and corporate records.
By evening, Cole Biomedical’s board suspended my father and froze all disputed voting shares.
The company’s stock dropped fourteen percent in one day.
Employees were furious.
Reporters parked outside the hospital.
And my father blamed Nora.
He called from county jail.
I answered once.
“You destroyed the company,” he said.
I almost laughed.
“You stole from it for seventeen years.”
“I kept it alive.”
“You were billing the company for fake vendors.”
“Do you know what it takes to run a business that size?”
“Apparently six million dollars to your secret brother.”
Silence.
Then he said, “Julian knows how to make trouble disappear.”
“Is that what Grandpa was? Trouble?”
Dad’s voice hardened.
“Be careful what Madison tells you. She’ll say anything to save herself.”
“Did Mom withhold Grandpa’s medication?”
He didn’t answer.
I didn’t need him to.
I hung up.
Nora watched me from the hospital bed.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good.”
I looked at her.
She gave me a tired smile.
“I’d be worried if you were okay after that conversation.”
I sat beside her.
“I spent my whole life fixing things for them.”
“I know.”
“I paid Madison’s rent. Covered Mom’s cards. Took Dad’s late-night calls. Every emergency became mine.”
Nora squeezed my hand.
“And every time you stopped, they called you selfish.”
That was exactly right.
A nurse entered with an envelope that had been delivered to the front desk.
No return address.
Inside was a storage-unit key and a note.
Ethan—Arthur left a second archive. Caleb doesn’t know I kept it. If I disappear, open Unit 314.
Signed: Elaine Porter.
I knew the name.
Grandpa’s former chief financial officer.
I hadn’t seen her in ten years.
Maya called her immediately.
No answer.
Police went to her house.
The front door was open.
May you like
Her car was gone.
And there were fresh blood drops on the kitchen floor.
