Chapter 12 - The Warehouse

The location pointed to an industrial warehouse near the river.

Police refused to let the family go.

Claire argued until a detective named Morales took her aside.

“You have already been threatened. You are not going into a possible hostage scene.”

“My aunt is in there.”

“And my job is to get her out.”

Claire hated the answer because it was reasonable.

She, Ethan, Lauren, Richard, and Margaret waited three blocks away inside two police vehicles.

Daniel rode with detectives.

Before he left, Claire grabbed his sleeve.

“My mother said money went from Peter to you.”

Daniel nodded.

“What was it?”

His eyes met hers.

“Payment.”

“For what?”

“To disappear.”

Claire stared at him.

“You took money to fake your death?”

“Yes.”

“From Peter?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward Margaret.

“Because he told me Richard would go to prison if I didn’t.”

Richard shouted from the other car.

“What?”

Daniel walked away before explaining.

At 2:04 a.m., police entered the warehouse.

At 2:11, gunshots cracked through the cold air.

Claire stopped breathing.

Ethan pulled her close.

Lauren began sobbing.

Margaret sat perfectly still.

Then radios came alive.

Suspect down.

Hostage secure.

One injured officer.

No fatal injuries.

Peter Merritt was arrested.

Susan was carried out wrapped in a blanket.

Alive.

Lauren ran to her.

Claire stayed back.

She watched Daniel emerge in handcuffs.

Not arrested, exactly.

Detained.

He had tried to enter the warehouse against orders.

Morales walked toward Claire.

“We found the ledger.”

Claire exhaled.

“And something else.”

He held up an evidence bag.

Inside was a small digital voice recorder.

“Peter had this in his pocket.”

They played one file at the station.

Peter’s voice.

Angry.

Drunk.

Talking to someone.

“I paid Daniel to disappear. I paid Anna to shut up. She wouldn’t. Then you told me to scare her.”

A woman answered.

Margaret.

Claire felt Ethan stiffen.

Margaret’s recorded voice said, “I told you to scare her, not touch her car.”

Peter: “You think that matters? She’s dead either way.”

Margaret: “Lower your voice.”

Peter: “You’re in this as deep as me.”

The file ended.

No one moved.

Claire looked at Margaret.

Margaret whispered, “I never told him to hurt your mother.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“But you knew.”

Margaret started crying.

It was the first time Claire had ever seen it.

Not elegant tears.

Not controlled emotion.

Real panic.

“I knew after.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was protecting Ethan.”

Ethan stepped back from her.

“No.”

Margaret reached for him.

He moved away.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Morales entered with another officer.

“Margaret Hale, we need you to come with us.”

She stared at her son.

“Ethan.”

He did not answer.

The handcuffs clicked.

Then Richard said, “Wait.”

Everyone looked at him.

His face was gray.

“There is something else the police need to know.”
