Chapter 13 - Richard’s Secret

Richard asked for a lawyer before he spoke.

That scared Ethan more than the arrest.

By sunrise, Claire had learned enough to understand why.

Nine years earlier, the night Anna Bennett died, Richard had received a call from Peter.

Peter said there had been an accident.

Richard drove to the scene before police arrived.

He saw skid marks.

He saw damage on Anna’s rear bumper.

He saw Peter’s truck parked down a service road.

And he left.

Claire stared at him across the interview room.

“You left my mother there?”

Richard cried.

“I thought she was already gone.”

“You left.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at Ethan.

“Because Peter said Margaret would be arrested. Ethan was twenty-four. Lauren was nineteen. I thought I was protecting my children.”

Claire stood so quickly the chair scraped back.

“Everybody in this family keeps using that word.”

Protecting.

Margaret protected the money.

Peter protected Margaret.

Richard protected the children.

Daniel protected Richard.

And Anna died alone beside a highway.

Ethan stood too.

“Claire.”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Not because she was pushing him away.

Because he finally understood that she needed room to be angry without him fixing it.

Richard covered his face.

“I have hated myself every day.”

Claire looked at him.

“Good.”

The word shocked everyone.

Even Claire.

But she did not take it back.

Morales entered with news.

Peter had requested a deal.

He was willing to provide evidence about Anna’s death, the trust fraud, and the forged bank documents.

In return, he wanted leniency.

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Of course he does.”

Then Morales added, “He says Daniel planned the original fraud.”

Daniel was in another room.

Claire closed her eyes.

Every truth in this family opened into another lie.

Ethan took her hand.

This time she let him.

“What happens now?” he asked.

Morales looked at them.

“Now we verify everything.”

Claire’s phone buzzed.

A bank alert.

She opened it.

Her joint checking account balance was zero.

Savings.

Zero.

Investment account.

Zero.

Ethan checked his phone.

Same.

All accounts drained.

They looked at each other.

Morales asked, “When were those transfers made?”

Claire read the timestamp.

“Thirty-two minutes ago.”

Margaret was in custody.

Peter was in custody.

Daniel was in custody.

Richard was sitting in front of them.

Lauren was with Susan.

Ethan whispered, “Then who moved the money?”

Claire thought of the recording.

Move everything tonight.

Not move the ledger.

Everything.

Someone else was involved.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

His company’s chief financial officer.

Ethan answered.

He listened for ten seconds.

His face changed.

“What do you mean, every payroll account?”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

He ended the call.

“All the company accounts are frozen.”

Richard whispered, “That’s impossible.”

Ethan looked at his father.

“No. It’s coordinated.”

Claire’s phone buzzed again.
