Chapter 18 - The Choice

Richard confessed before police confronted him.

He had moved Peter’s truck from the service road.

He wiped the steering wheel.

He threw away a broken piece of bumper.

He did it while Anna was being loaded into an ambulance.

He told himself he was keeping Ethan and Lauren from losing their mother.

He told himself Peter would confess later.

He told himself a dozen things.

None were true.

Claire listened from across the room.

When he finished, she said, “You helped erase her.”

Richard broke.

Not theatrically.

He simply folded forward and sobbed.

Claire felt nothing for him in that moment.

Maybe that would change.

Maybe not.

He was charged with obstruction and evidence tampering.

Peter faced far more serious charges.

Mason faced kidnapping, fraud, cybercrime, and conspiracy counts.

Daniel accepted that his old financial crimes would be reviewed too.

Margaret remained in custody.

By the evening of December 26, the Hale empire still existed.

But the family around it had changed shape.

Claire and Ethan returned home.

Their apartment felt unfamiliar.

The Christmas tree was still dark.

Unopened presents sat under it.

Ethan made coffee neither of them drank.

Then he sat across from Claire at the kitchen table.

“You met with a divorce attorney.”

She had almost forgotten.

“Yes.”

“Were you going to leave me?”

“I didn’t know.”

He nodded.

“That hurts.”

“I know.”

“But I understand why.”

Claire looked at him.

He continued.

“I kept asking you to survive things I should have stopped.”

She looked down.

“I poured soup on your mother.”

“I noticed.”

A laugh escaped her before she could stop it.

Ethan smiled briefly.

Then he became serious.

“I don’t want us to stay married because we survived a crime together.”

“Good.”

“I want us to decide what we are without my mother in the middle.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“And if I still want to leave?”

His face tightened.

“Then I help you leave cleanly.”

She stared at him.

Six years earlier, he would have promised never to let her go.

Tonight, he gave her the one thing his family rarely gave anyone.

Choice.

Claire reached across the table.

He took her hand.

Her phone rang.

Attorney.

Probate review.

Claire answered.

She listened.

Then she looked at Ethan.

“What?”

“The trust amendment is valid.”

His face softened.

“Claire—”

She held up a hand.

“There’s more.”

The attorney said Eleanor left a final instruction attached to Claire’s shares.

Not a legal condition.

A personal request.

Claire read it aloud.

If the family ever turns money into a weapon, use your share to break the weapon.

Ethan leaned back.

May you like

Claire stared at the sentence.

Then she knew exactly what she wanted to do.
