Chapter 11 - The Case Against Me

By noon, my own life had been turned into evidence against me.
The filing painted me as unstable.
Aggressive.
Paranoid.
Dangerous around children.
It included photographs of me after boxing workouts.
Old military records.
A bar fight from age twenty-three.
And statements from employees saying I had “a temper.”
All technically true in pieces.
Completely false as a whole.
Ortiz said, “They’ve been building this.”
“For how long?”
“Years.”
A temporary hearing was set for forty-eight hours.
If the judge believed the filing, Graham could gain emergency control of the trust.
And if that happened, he could move assets before the criminal case caught up.
Then social services arrived.
Two caseworkers.
They had received an anonymous report that I forced Emma to perform dangerous household work while carrying an infant.
I nearly broke a chair.
Maria grabbed my arm.
“Adrian.”
I stopped.
That was exactly what Graham wanted.
A reaction.
I opened the door.
The caseworkers interviewed Emma alone.
I waited in the kitchen with Noah in my arms.
Twenty minutes later, Emma ran out and hugged my leg.
One caseworker followed.
“Mr. Cole, your daughter says you discovered the situation last night and stopped it.”
“Yes.”
“She says Ms. Sterling instructed her to clean and care for the baby.”
“Yes.”
“She also says you yelled.”
My stomach sank.
“At Vanessa.”
“She says you never yelled at her.”
I nodded.
The caseworker softened slightly.
“We still need to investigate.”
“I understand.”
After they left, Emma looked guilty.
“Did I get you in trouble?”
I knelt.
“No.”
“But I told them everything.”
“That’s what you were supposed to do.”
She stared at me.
“Even the bad things?”
“Especially the bad things.”
Her eyes filled.
“Vanessa said families disappear when kids tell.”
My throat tightened.
“She lied.”
Then someone knocked.
A courier handed me an envelope.
No return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
Claire in a hospital bed after the crash.
Her eyes were open.
She was awake.
The timestamp was 11:42 p.m.
Graham had told me she never regained consciousness.
On the back, someone had written:
SHE SPOKE AT 11:47.
