Chapter 15 - The Hearing

The emergency trust hearing began the next morning.
Graham appeared by video from jail.
His lawyer argued that I was violent, unstable, and incapable of protecting my children.
My attorney, Rachel Kim, did not raise her voice once.
She placed the cleaning schedule on the judge’s desk.
Then Maria’s video.
Then the forged diagnosis.
Then the fake paternity report.
Then the life insurance policy.
Graham’s lawyer objected to nearly everything.
The judge overruled nearly everything.
Then Vanessa entered the courtroom.
Not as my fiancée.
As a witness for the state.
She looked exhausted.
No makeup.
No jewelry.
Nothing of the woman I had thought I knew.
Rachel asked, “Did you threaten Emma Cole?”
Vanessa swallowed. “Yes.”
“Did you make her clean at night?”
“Yes.”
“Did you force her to care for Noah?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Tears filled Vanessa’s eyes.
“Because she found the red box.”
“What was in the box?”
“Evidence against Graham. And against me.”
“Why didn’t you destroy it?”
Vanessa looked toward me.
“Because part of me wanted Adrian to find it.”
I felt no sympathy.
Not yet.
Rachel asked, “Then why threaten a child?”
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“Because I was a coward.”
The courtroom went silent.
She continued.
“I told myself I was protecting Adrian from Graham. Really, I was protecting myself from prison.”
Graham shouted from the monitor, “She’s lying!”
Vanessa looked straight at the screen.
“You killed Claire.”
His lawyer objected.
The judge ordered Graham muted.
Vanessa described the medication.
The canceled repair.
The hospital cover-up.
Then Rachel asked the question that changed the room.
“Did Dr. Hartley ever tell you what Graham planned for Adrian?”
Vanessa nodded.
“He wanted Adrian sedated, admitted under a false psychiatric hold, and declared incompetent.”
“And the children?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Placed with a temporary guardian.”
“Who?”
She opened them.
“Graham.”
The judge immediately froze the trust.
Graham lost every emergency power.
For the first time, we had won something.
Then Ortiz received a text.
She walked out.
A minute later she returned, pale.
Hartley had been found.
Dead in a motel room.
And beside him was a handwritten note confessing to everything.
Too neat.
Too convenient.
Rachel whispered, “Graham just lost his last living accomplice.”
Ortiz shook her head.
“No.”
She handed us a photograph from the scene.
On Hartley’s wrist was a hospital band.

Timestamped two hours after he supposedly checked into the motel.
Someone had moved the body.
