Chapter 19 - The Trial

The trial lasted seven weeks.
Voss looked smaller in court.
Graham looked older.
Neither looked sorry.
The prosecution showed the jury the trust documents.
Claire’s videos.
Maria’s footage.
The hospital note.
The blood sample.
The forged medical records.
The payment trails.
Vanessa testified for two days.
On cross-examination, Graham’s lawyer tried to paint her as the mastermind.
She did not fight for her dignity.
She simply told the truth.
“Yes, I lied to Adrian.”
“Yes, I threatened Emma.”
“Yes, I benefited from the fraud.”
“Yes, I was afraid.”
Then she said, “Fear explains what I did. It does not excuse it.”
I looked down.
That was the first thing she had said in years that I completely believed.
Maria testified.
Evelyn Park testified.
Ortiz testified.
Then I did.
The defense asked whether I hated my brother.
“Yes.”
Whether I wanted revenge.
“No.”
The lawyer smiled.
“You expect this jury to believe that?”
“I want him held responsible. Revenge is different.”
He stepped closer.
“Your fiancée deceived you for years. Your daughter was mistreated under your roof. Your wife discovered a conspiracy you missed. Isn’t it true, Mr. Cole, that you’re here because you need someone else to blame for your failures?”
The courtroom went silent.
I could have exploded.
Five years earlier, I would have.
Instead, I said, “I have failures to answer for. So do they.”
The smile left his face.
The jury convicted Voss on conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and multiple related counts.
Graham was convicted on conspiracy, fraud, witness tampering, unlawful restraint, and charges tied to Claire’s death that had once seemed impossible to prove.
Not every count.
Enough.
When the verdicts were read, I felt no triumph.
Only air returning to a room that had been sealed too long.
Outside court, reporters shouted questions.
I ignored them.
Emma was waiting in the car with Maria and Noah.
She held up a drawing.
Four stick figures.
Me.
Her.
Noah.
Maria.
Above us she had drawn a huge yellow moon.
“Who’s that?” I asked, pointing to a fifth shape in the sky.
“Mommy.”
I swallowed.
Emma looked at me seriously.
“She’s not living there.”
“No?”
“No. It’s just a picture.”
I smiled.
“That makes sense.”
Then Maria’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“It’s Vanessa.”
My stomach tightened.
“She wants to give Emma something.”
I shook my head.
May you like
Then Maria added:
“She says it belonged to Claire.”
