Chapter 11 - The Theft That Never Happened

By seven that evening, Marcus had delivered the first packet.

Bank transfers.

Jewelry appraisals.

Copies of checks supposedly signed by Mother.

A spreadsheet showing forty-seven thousand dollars moving from Mother's personal account into an account under Clara's name.

Clara stared at the papers.

"I've never seen that account."

"I know."

"How?"

"Because he made one mistake."

I pointed to the routing number.

The bank belonged to a private division Hale Meridian had sold three years earlier.

Marcus had used an old internal template.

Good forgery.

Not perfect.

Leo entered.

"We traced the burner phone. It pinged from inside the old gatehouse. Empty when we got there."

Mother sat by the fire, pale but alert.

"Marcus wants us looking at the forgery," she said.

I turned.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning he's doing something else."

Clara looked at the codicil in my hand.

"The board."

Exactly.

The annual emergency governance meeting was scheduled for nine the next morning because of Mother's health and pending estate matters.

Marcus had called it weeks ago.

Before any of us knew why.

I called my general counsel.

"Freeze all trust actions until further notice."

"Bennett, Marcus is trustee. He can—"

"Not anymore if this codicil is valid."

Silence.

"What codicil?"

"You'll see it at nine."

I hung up.

Clara shook her head.

"I don't want eighteen percent of anything."

Mother looked at her sharply.

"That is not the point."

"It feels like the point to everyone else."

"Then everyone else is wrong."

Clara turned to me. "If giving it up makes him stop—"

"He won't stop."

"You don't know that."

"I know men like Marcus. Control is never about the object. It's about proving he gets to decide who matters."

Mother closed her eyes.

"I helped him once."

The room went still.

I looked at her.

"What?"

She swallowed.

"When Rose became pregnant, Marcus came to me first. He said Henry would leave me. He said you would lose your father. I was angry. Humiliated. I told Marcus I wanted Rose gone."

Clara's face drained.

Mother's voice shook.

"I did not know he threatened her. But I gave him permission to solve the problem."

Clara stood.

"I need air."

"Clara—"

"Please."

She walked out.

Mother began crying.

I had never seen her do that.

Before I could speak, Leo's radio exploded with static.

Then an alarm sounded through the house.

Fire.

The smoke detector panel flashed one location.

THE ARCHIVE ROOM.
