Chapter 16 - Under Henry's Name

At dawn, Clara and I went to the family chapel.
Father's memorial plaque was mounted beside the altar.
HENRY JAMES HALE.
Beloved Husband. Father. Founder.
Three polished lies and one true name.
"Under Henry's name," Clara repeated.
I ran my fingers beneath the brass plate.
Nothing.
Clara crouched and looked at the stone ledge.
"Here."
A tiny keyhole.
The brass key Mother had given me days earlier fit perfectly.
The plaque released from the wall.
Behind it sat a narrow metal box.
Inside were three things.
A photograph of Father holding baby Clara.
A handwritten letter to me.
And a second letter addressed to Clara.
She stared at her name.
"Open it," I said.
"You first."
I unfolded mine.
Bennett,
If you are reading this, I either found the courage to tell you or failed again. Clara is your sister. None of this is her fault. I let Marcus convince me that protecting the company meant protecting you. In truth, I was protecting myself from humiliation. Do not inherit my cowardice.
I stopped.
Clara watched me.
"Keep going."
The rest was worse.
Father admitted he had planned to remove Marcus as trustee the morning after meeting Samuel Price. He knew Marcus had been moving money through shell companies for years. The codicil was not merely about Clara. It would also trigger an independent audit.
That was why Marcus had needed Father stopped.
Clara opened her letter.
She read silently, tears gathering.
Then she handed it to me.
My dear Clara,
You were never a mistake. I was.
That single sentence destroyed her.
She covered her face and sobbed.
I did the only thing I could think to do.
I held her.
Not because I knew how.
Because Mother had taught me what happens when you wait too long.
After several minutes, Clara pulled away.
"There's something else in the box."
A memory card.
We took it to Leo.
The card contained scans of company ledgers from thirteen years earlier.
Shell corporations.
Trust transfers.
Millions diverted.
Marcus had been stealing from the company long before Father's death.
Leo looked at me.
"This ends him."
My phone buzzed.
Dana Cole.
"Bennett, Marcus made bail pending the homicide review."
I stood.
"What?"
"The old recording isn't enough by itself. We're moving fast, but—"
The mansion alarm sounded.
Leo's screen flashed.
Perimeter breach.
May you like
Then another alert.
Mother's bedroom window.
