Chapter 16 - The Paper in Her Hand

Celeste laid the documents on the hood of a police cruiser. Her hands shook so badly that Mara had to hold down the corners in the wind.

The authorization described a plan to empty Mercer House ahead of a redevelopment vote. A staged electrical inspection would clear tenants from their apartments. The stairwell override, installed without approval, would prevent people from returning before the property was sealed. The document didn't order a fire. It did prove that the men who claimed never to have heard of the override had paid for it.

"A short in the service equipment started the fire," Rosa said. "The report said the fault was unavoidable. But if those doors were locked, the tenants were trapped by design."

Mara imagined her father running up the stairs, pounding on a door that wouldn't open. She remembered reading his trial transcript at twenty-two and wondering why he couldn't explain what happened. He had said it plainly. Nobody powerful had wanted to hear him.

Grant laughed once, a terrible dry sound. "My daughter is confused. She's been under strain."

"I was confused when you told me Mara wanted money," Celeste said. "I was confused when you made me sign the demolition clearance. I am not confused now."

"You were told to protect this family."

"You taught me that protecting our name meant making other people disappear."

She turned to Mara. "I attacked you. I helped keep Jonah quiet. I'm not going to pretend I was a victim of everything. I can give the police the messages and my signed statement."

It was not forgiveness Mara felt. It was a reluctant recognition that Celeste, for once, had stopped hiding behind what she wore or whom she knew.

Brooks took the folder and requested an immediate preservation order covering the Varrick and Bellamy business records. One attorney began calling his office. Another advised Grant not to speak.

At the far end of the street, Adrian's father stepped from a black limousine. Hugh Bellamy saw the documents on the hood, his son's bloodstained shirt, and the open wound in the Mercer House wall.

He walked directly to Mara.

"Your father signed a confession," he said. "Do you want to know who helped him write it?"
