Chapter 8 - The Money Tells You

Jonah refused an ambulance until Mara promised to keep the receipt. "My mom counted rent for the whole building," he said. "She knew every family who lived there. Someone paid to make people forget them."

Outside the changing rooms, the first police sirens rose along the palace drive. Pike would have to explain a gunshot and a kidnapped server. At least Mara hoped he would.

The receipt belonged to a private holding company called Calder Services. On its back Jonah had written an account reference and a web address for a secure document drop. He had gained access through his mother's old bank correspondence and a records request, then worked a single shift at the gala to put it in Mara's hands.

"I was supposed to meet you before the speeches," he said. "Pike found out."

Nell Sato joined them near the kitchen after showing her press credentials to an arriving officer. She opened the document drop on an offline tablet Jonah had brought. Rows of payments appeared, each bearing a code and a date.

There were transfers to the companies that supplied the original fire investigation. There were checks to witnesses who had recanted. And there were monthly payments under a heading marked KEENE, I.

Mara read the line three times. Her mother's initials. Her mother's bank.

"It's a settlement," Adrian said, as if naming it could soften the blow.

"She told me we never received a cent."

Nell checked the first date. "These started the month after your father died."

For years Mara had watched her mother count coins on their kitchen table. Inez had worked late shifts at a laundromat, hid bills in flour tins, and begged Mara to stop asking questions before somebody else got hurt. Yet money had been arriving while they struggled to keep the lights on.

"A payment doesn't prove consent," Nell said. "It could be coercion."

"I know," Mara answered, but her throat felt raw.

Jonah leaned forward, wincing. "Look at the authorizations. They're not bank numbers. They're project names."

The largest transfer bore a date two days before the fire. Recipient: O. PIKE CONSULTING. Memo: EGRESS COMPLIANCE.

Beneath it was a second line, much larger, to a trust controlled by Hugh Bellamy. Its authorization had been entered by VARRICK, C.

Adrian stared at the initial. "Celeste approved it?"

Celeste had followed them into the corridor. She read the screen over his shoulder and whispered, "No. That's not possible."

Then she said something far worse.

"That account was opened in my name when I was sixteen."
