Chapter 18 - Nine Seventeen

They listened in a quiet room at the police station while a digital copy of the preserved recording played through a speaker. Brooks had obtained it directly from the evidence custodian, together with the original chain-of-custody record.

A dispatcher said, "Mercer House service line. State your emergency."

Then came Daniel Keene's voice, breathless and raw. Mara gripped the edge of the table. She hadn't heard him speak in eleven years.

"The pump's running," Daniel said. "Water pressure is good, but the west stair doors won't release. Somebody's holding the override. Tell the firefighters the remote box is outside, in the construction trailer."

Metal struck metal. People shouted in the distance. Daniel cried out for someone to move away from the smoke. His next words were nearly swallowed by a siren.

"I'm going back for the seventh floor."

A second voice, sharper and closer to the recorder, said, "Leave those doors. The building's under clearance order."

"There are people inside!" Daniel shouted.

Mara heard her father hit something hard. The speaker crackled. The recording ended.

Rosa identified the second voice as Owen Pike's. Adrian knew it too. So did Celeste, who had come to the station to sign her statement and stood in the doorway listening. She covered her mouth with one hand.

"They told the jury the pump was off," Mara said. "The proof that it was on was in the prosecutor's own file."

Amara Holt began preparing an application to vacate Daniel's conviction and a motion to disclose the hidden exhibit. Brooks sent investigators to the construction trailer supplier and sought warrants for the records held by both companies.

Adrian stayed with Mara when the others left the room. "I didn't know," he said.

"I believe you."

"That doesn't make what my family did smaller."

"No. It doesn't."

He didn't reach for her hand. He sat beside her until she was ready to stand.

Then Brooks returned, her expression tight. "Pike's gone into the old site office. We think he's destroying the original control logs. He has a firearm."

Mara got up, and Adrian followed her toward the door.
