Chapter 4 - Drawer Fourteen

The north gallery was lined with family portraits. Generations of Bellamys stared down from gilded frames as if disapproving of the living. Beyond them stretched an enormous mirror that made the corridor look twice as long.

"My grandmother had that installed," Adrian said. "I used to hide behind it when I was a kid."

Mara looked at him. "You can get us through?"

"I can remember being twelve, at least."

He pressed the carved leaf beneath a portrait. The mirror shifted, revealing a plain gray door. On the other side was a former accounting office, now lined with fireproof filing cabinets. For a palace built to display wealth, its hidden archive looked painfully ordinary.

Drawer fourteen resisted the little brass key, then opened with a tired metallic scrape.

A single box sat inside. Someone had labeled it MERCER HOUSE: RETENTION / DO NOT DESTROY. The papers smelled faintly of old smoke. Mara found invoices, inspection requests, photographs of rusted doors, and a maintenance log whose pages had been numbered in red pencil.

"There," she said, tapping a line from the day of the fire. "Pressure system tested at six thirty. Normal. My father signed it."

Adrian compared the next page. "And at nine seventeen the pump was supposedly disconnected by him."

"He was already at the hospital with a broken wrist. The records are public."

"Then why did the jury believe—"

"Because the hospital receipt disappeared, and three witnesses changed their stories."

One sheet remained stuck to the bottom of the box. Mara peeled it free. It was a photograph of an electrical cabinet bearing a control label: STAIRWELL RELEASE, REMOTE OVERRIDE. A little red marker had been drawn around a serial number.

Adrian took out his phone and photographed it. "I recognize this hardware. My father had the same system installed here. You can lock doors from one station."

Mara went cold. During the fire, somebody could have sealed the stairwells without ever entering the building.

Below the photograph lay a folded invoice authorizing the override installation. The buyer's name had been obscured with correction fluid. But the signature line was intact: H. BELLAMY.

"That's my father's handwriting," Adrian said.

A key scraped in the outer door.

Adrian pushed the box toward Mara. She slid behind a cabinet just as the handle turned. Owen Pike stepped into the archive with a flashlight and a gun held low at his side.

"I was hoping," he said pleasantly, "you'd find that drawer for me."
