Chapter 13 - The Name She Said

Adrian stood so fast his chair scraped the floor.
"My father is dead."
"Exactly," Vanessa said. "Which makes him very convenient to ignore."
Richard Cole had died five years earlier after a stroke. He had been brilliant, controlling, and obsessed with keeping the company inside the family.
Vanessa claimed Richard created the trust structure Marcus later exploited.
"Marcus worked for him before he worked for you," she said. "Your father taught him where every pressure point was."
"That doesn't make my father part of Claire's death."
"No. But it explains why Marcus believed he deserved control. Richard promised him a permanent seat at the table. You took over and treated him like an employee."
Adrian remembered arguments Marcus had disguised as jokes.
Your father understood loyalty better than you do.
Grant investigated old corporate files and found private compensation agreements Richard had signed with Marcus. One contained a handwritten clause promising Marcus future authority over Cole family assets if Adrian became "incapable of responsible stewardship."
It was legally worthless.
Psychologically, it explained plenty.
Marcus thought the empire had been promised to him.
And Oliver's birth had made that impossible.
Vanessa offered a deal: she would testify against Marcus if prosecutors reduced her charges.
Adrian refused to negotiate personally.
"Tell the truth because it's the truth," he said.
Vanessa's smile was exhausted. "You still think truth is enough."
That evening, the hospital cleared Oliver to go home.
Adrian refused to return to the mansion. He rented a secured townhouse and moved Maria into the guest room temporarily because she was now a witness under threat.
At 2:06 a.m., the fire alarm went off.
Maria ran into the hallway with Oliver in her arms.
No smoke.
No fire.
Adrian checked the security panel.
A downstairs window was open.
On the kitchen counter sat Claire's blue notebook.
The one Marcus had stolen.
A sticky note was attached.
YOU MISSED THE LAST PAGE.
Adrian flipped to the back.
One page had been torn out.
On the inside cover, Claire had written a single sentence.

If Marcus gets desperate, he will go after the board meeting on October 3.
October 3 was tomorrow.
