Chapter 16 - The Chase

Marcus escaped through the garden tunnel and stole an unmarked maintenance vehicle.
Police units followed him toward the interstate.
Adrian rode with Grant, listening to radio updates.
Marcus drove aggressively but not randomly. He was heading north.
"Where would he go?" Grant asked.
Adrian thought of old Cole properties.
Then he knew.
"Blackwood Airfield. My father owned a hangar there."
Grant radioed ahead.
At the townhouse, Maria packed Oliver's things under police supervision. She was tired of being moved, tired of hiding, tired of hearing men discuss her life like a route on a map.
Then she found something inside Oliver's diaper bag.
A folded photograph.
Claire and Maria, two years earlier, standing outside a café.
On the back Claire had written: If anything happens, trust Maria.
Maria sat down hard.
Claire had planned further ahead than anyone knew.
At Blackwood, Marcus crashed the maintenance vehicle through a side gate and ran toward an old hangar.
Inside waited a small charter plane.
Police blocked the runway.
Marcus retreated into the hangar and took the pilot hostage.
Adrian arrived just as negotiators established contact.
"He wants to speak to you," an officer said.
Adrian took the phone.
Marcus's voice was strained now.
"Tell them to clear the runway."
"It's over."
"Nothing is over until I decide it is."
"Claire didn't get that choice."
Silence.
Then Marcus said, "Claire was supposed to sell you out. I offered her money. She refused. Your perfect wife wasn't perfect, Adrian. She knew your father had hidden accounts."
"She was investigating you."
"She was investigating all of us."
Adrian heard a metallic click.
The hostage cried out.
"Marcus, don't."
"Clear the runway."
Before Adrian could answer, a second voice came through the open phone line.
A woman's voice.
Vanessa.
"Marcus, put the gun down."
Adrian turned toward the police command van.
Vanessa was standing there in handcuffs, brought under escort to assist.
May you like
Marcus went silent.
Then he whispered, "You betrayed me."
