Chapter 7 - The Empty Crib

Adrian called the hospital so fast he nearly dropped the phone.
Oliver was still there.
Safe.
Asleep.
The nursery image had been bait.
But the bait told them something important: whoever was helping Marcus still had access to the mansion camera network.
Grant forced Elliot into police custody while Adrian and Maria returned to the estate.
The house felt different now. Less like home. More like a stage built around hidden doors.
Grant's team isolated the network and discovered a second router installed behind the nursery wall. It had been transmitting selected camera feeds to an outside server.
"Someone has been watching Oliver for months," Grant said.
Adrian stared at the tiny blinking device.
"Who had access to this wall?"
The renovation records listed one contractor.
Vale Development Services.
A subsidiary Adrian had never heard of.
Owned through three layers of shell companies by Marcus.
Maria opened Claire's notebook. Several entries mentioned Vanessa visiting the house long before Adrian publicly introduced her as his girlfriend.
One entry stopped them cold.
V. says the baby changes everything. M. says the trust activates only if Adrian has a living biological heir.
"What trust?" Maria asked.
Adrian suddenly remembered his grandfather's estate plan.
Cole Holdings had a dormant family control provision. If Adrian died without a biological heir, voting control passed to a charitable foundation. If he had an heir, the shares remained in trust for the child.
Oliver wasn't merely Adrian's son.
He was the legal barrier preventing billions in voting rights from leaving the Cole bloodline.
Grant leaned back. "If someone gained guardianship of Oliver after your death..."
Adrian finished the thought.
"They could control the trust through him."
Maria went pale.
Vanessa had been pushing for a wedding.
Marcus had been pushing Adrian to update his estate documents.
Claire had died after discovering both of them.
Then Grant's laptop chimed.
A hidden remote session had just connected to the nursery router.
Grant traced it in real time.
The source was not across town.
Not even outside the property.
It was coming from the guesthouse thirty yards behind the mansion.
Adrian grabbed the nearest flashlight.
"Vanessa left two hours ago," Maria said.
Adrian looked through the dark window toward the guesthouse.

One upstairs curtain moved.
"Maybe she never left."
