Chapter 14 - The Rule Noah Remembered

Daniel photographed the license plate before the sedan disappeared.
The image was blurry, but the last three numbers were clear.
Ramirez traced them to a rental car company.
The car had been rented with a fake ID.
"We're treating this as a credible concern," he said. "Do not take Noah anywhere alone."
Emily held Noah tighter.
That night, they made a family safety rule.
Daniel crouched in front of him.
"If anyone says Mommy or Daddy sent them to pick you up, what do you ask?"
Noah answered proudly, "Password."
"And the password is?"
Noah whispered it into Daniel's ear.
"Perfect. Don't tell anyone else."
Emily kissed his forehead.
"Even if they say they know us."
Noah nodded.
Two days passed with no sign of Vince.
The house almost felt quiet again.
On Friday morning, Ruth begged to take Noah to the small fenced playground near her apartment.
Daniel hesitated.
Emily looked at Ruth. "You follow the rule. You don't leave him. Not for one second."
Ruth's eyes filled. "I won't."
The playground had families, cameras, and a police substation two blocks away.
They agreed.
At 10:46 a.m., Ruth called screaming.
"A man tried to take Noah."
Emily dropped her coffee.
They reached the playground in six minutes.
Noah was sitting with a police officer, clutching Ruth's coat.
Ruth was crying so hard she could barely speak.
"He came through the side gate. He said Daniel sent him. He knew Noah's name."
Daniel knelt in front of his son.
"What happened, buddy?"
Noah's eyes were huge.
"I asked password."
Daniel's throat closed.
"And?"
"He said, 'No time.'"
Noah's little mouth trembled.
"So I yelled."
A father near the swings had stepped between Noah and the man. Ruth had called 911. The stranger ran.
The witness gave police a clear description.
Not Vince Harper.
Marcus.
Emily stood slowly.
"His own uncle tried to lure him away?"
Ramirez's face was grim.
"We have an alert out for Marcus."
Daniel stared toward the gate, fury burning through every layer of fear.
His phone buzzed.
A text from Marcus.
You keep making this worse. Bring me Dad's recording tonight, and this ends.
Daniel showed Ramirez.
Another message arrived.
