Chapter 18 - The Last Door

Daniel did not go outside.
That choice saved the night from becoming something worse.
He called 911, locked every door, and moved with Emily into the upstairs bathroom, the only room with a solid interior lock and no ground-level windows.
Noah was still with Ruth at the police station.
The house could be replaced.
They could not.
A crash sounded downstairs.
Marcus had broken the kitchen door window.
Emily gripped Daniel's arm.
"Stay here."
"I am."
They heard drawers opening. Furniture scraping.
Then Marcus shouted from below.
"Daniel!"
No answer.
"I know you're here!"
Sirens wailed in the distance.
Marcus ran upstairs.
His steps hit the hallway.
The bathroom doorknob turned once.
Then again.
"Open the door."
Daniel stood between the door and Emily.
"Police are coming, Marcus."
"You always needed someone to save you. Dad. Mom. Emily. Cops."
Daniel's voice stayed level.
"What do you want?"
"The file."
"Police have it."
Silence.
Then the crowbar struck the door once.
Emily jumped.
Daniel did not move.
"You tried to take Noah," he said.
Marcus shouted back, "I was trying to scare you!"
"He's three."
"You took everything from me!"
Daniel's anger finally rose.
"Dad gave you money for twenty years. I gave you eighteen thousand dollars. Mom defended you until you used her key to break into our home. What exactly did I take?"
No answer.
The sirens stopped outside.
Voices filled the yard.
Marcus hit the door again.
"He chose you."
There it was.
Not the house.
Not the money.
The wound underneath all of it.
Daniel leaned closer to the door.
"Dad loved you. But he stopped rescuing you. Those aren't the same thing."
Marcus made a sound that was almost a laugh and almost a sob.
Then officers flooded the hallway.
"Drop it!"
The crowbar hit the floor.
Emily covered her mouth.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Marcus did not fight.
As officers led him down the stairs, he looked back once.
For the first time, he did not look angry.
He looked empty.
Three hours later, Daniel and Emily picked up Noah.
He ran into their arms.
"We go home now?"
Daniel looked at Emily.
The kitchen window was broken. The workshop was gone. Their savings were damaged. Their trust had scars.
Home no longer felt like a simple word.
Then Noah touched both their faces and whispered the question that neither of them was ready for.

"If house is broken... are we still my best family?"
