Chapter 10 - Twenty-Two Weeks

Claire wouldn't look at me.

"What happened at twenty-two weeks?"

She picked at the edge of the hospital blanket.

"We had an ultrasound."

"I know. I was there."

"Not that one. Another one. Two days later."

My pulse jumped.

"Why?"

She finally met my eyes.

"They saw something on the first scan. A possible issue with his heart. Dr. Patel wanted a specialist to take another look."

I felt anger rise, then forced it down.

"And?"

"The specialist said it was probably a shadow. Follow-up scans have been normal."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you were about to leave for Boston, and Dr. Patel said there was no reason to panic until we knew more."

"I would have stayed."

"Would you?"

The question was quiet.

That made it worse.

I sat back.

Claire's eyes filled.

"I'm not saying you don't love us. You do. But every time something happened, you had a flight, a meeting, a crisis at the company. And your mother was always there saying, 'Don't bother Adrian. He has enough on him.'"

I closed my eyes.

My mother had been managing both of us.

Keeping Claire quiet by telling her I was too busy.

Keeping me calm by telling me Claire was emotional.

"How did she know about the second scan?"

"Susan. I think."

"And that's when this started?"

Claire nodded.

"Your mother became obsessed with the idea that I was hiding medical problems from the family. She said the baby wasn't just mine. She said he belonged to the Vales."

My stomach turned.

"What else?"

"She wanted every scan, every lab, every note. When I said no, she told me she had ways of getting them."

A nurse entered and checked the monitors.

"Contractions are spacing out," she said. "That's good. Try to rest."

Rest felt impossible.

My phone rang again.

This time it was Leah.

"Adrian, I found tomorrow's calendar entry."

"What entry?"

"Your mother's private calendar. She shared it with the executive office by mistake."

I stood.

"Read it."

Leah hesitated.

"Saturday, 6:30 p.m. St. Matthew's. 'C. induction.' Then at 9:00 p.m., 'Family counsel - guardianship execution.'"

Claire's face went blank.

"That's impossible," I said. "Claire isn't scheduled for an induction."

Leah's voice was barely above a whisper.

"According to the calendar, she was."

Then Dr. Patel rushed into the room holding her phone.

"Claire," she said, "someone just canceled your actual thirty-six-week appointment and replaced it with a hospital admission for tomorrow evening."
