Chapter 19 - My Father's Warning

The video showed my mother in her study with Martin Cole, the former hospital employee.
She slid a folder across the desk.
"Adrian will be overseas," she said.
Cole asked, "You want the wife declared incompetent?"
"Temporarily incapable of making safe decisions."
"And the baby?"
"Comes home with me until Adrian understands."
Cole leaned back. "I'm not touching a kidnapping."
"Nobody said kidnapping."
The video ended.
Ramirez said Cole's lawyer was arranging his surrender.
Then he handed me a second evidence sleeve.
Inside was a letter in my father's handwriting, dated seven years earlier.
He admitted the affair with Susan. He admitted my mother knew. Near the end, one sentence stopped me cold:
Your mother loves fiercely, but when fear takes over, she mistakes possession for love. Do not make the same mistake with your own family.
My father had warned me before I ever met Claire.
My mother had hidden the letter for seven years.
Back in Claire's room, I handed it to her.
She read it quietly.
"What are you going to do?" she asked.
I knew she wasn't asking about the police.
"Resign from the family board. Remove my mother from every trust role I legally can. And get help for the part of me that kept calling control 'complicated love.'"
Claire's eyes softened.
"And us?"
"I earn back what I broke."
She didn't forgive me on command.
She only said, "Start by taking me to see our son."

Then a nurse opened the door, pale.
"Mr. and Mrs. Vale, there's been an issue in the neonatal unit."
