Chapter 1 - The Front Doors

The first thing Jack Mercer saw was his daughter on the floor.

Not crying. Not screaming.

Just sitting on polished white marble with one hand braced behind her, her cream dress twisted around her knees, staring at the dark leather strap hanging from her husband's hand.

Jack stopped in the open doorway.

Sunlight poured around him from the circular drive outside. For half a second, the enormous Vale mansion looked exactly the way it always did—cream columns, crystal chandelier, gold-trimmed chairs, fresh flowers tall enough to hide a child.

Then Claire looked at him.

“Dad.”

One word. Barely a breath.

Jack crossed the foyer so fast his boots slapped against the marble.

“What happened to my daughter?”

Ethan Vale stood ten feet away in a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows. His chest rose and fell too quickly. He still held the strap.

Behind him, Charles and Margaret Vale sat rigid in their carved chairs as if someone had told them not to move.

“Jack,” Margaret said. “This is a private family matter.”

Jack dropped beside Claire.

She flinched when his hand moved toward her shoulder.

That tiny movement hit him harder than a punch.

“Hey,” he said softly. “It’s me.”

Claire looked up. Her eyes were wet, but her voice was steady enough to break his heart.

“I know.”

He helped her to her feet. She grabbed the front of his olive field jacket and held on.

Jack saw the red mark around her wrist.

Then he saw the strap again.

He turned.

“Did you do this?”

Ethan’s jaw tightened. “You don’t understand what she did.”

Jack pulled the black radio from his belt. Sentinel Protective Services had guarded the Vale property for six years. Jack had founded the company after leaving the Army, but he had never once used the emergency channel inside this house.

Until now.

“I need security in the main hall. Now.”

Static cracked.

Ethan’s confidence shifted.

“Jack, don’t make a scene,” Charles said.

Jack stepped between Ethan and Claire.

“You don’t understand,” Ethan said.

“Then start explaining.”

Ethan looked past him at Claire.

Claire’s grip tightened on Jack’s jacket.

And then she whispered something only he could hear.

“Dad, don’t let them take my phone.”
