Chapter 2 - The Strap

Jack did not look down.

“Where is it?” he asked quietly.

“My pocket.”

Two Sentinel guards entered through the front doors. Luis Ramirez came first, broad and calm, one hand near his radio. Behind him was Dana Brooks, the estate’s daytime supervisor.

Ethan immediately dropped the leather strap onto a console table.

“See?” he said. “No one needs security. Claire got hysterical.”

Claire stiffened.

Jack felt it through her shoulder.

“Hysterical about what?” Dana asked.

Ethan gave her the smile Jack had seen at charity dinners, investor lunches, and Christmas parties. Smooth. Patient. Expensive.

“She broke into my father’s study and stole confidential files.”

“I copied files,” Claire said.

Margaret stood. “Files that do not belong to you.”

Claire finally let go of Jack’s jacket.

“They have my name on them.”

Silence.

Charles looked away.

Jack noticed.

“What files?” he asked.

Claire reached toward the pocket of her dress.

Ethan took one quick step forward.

Luis moved between them.

“Stay where you are, sir.”

Ethan’s face hardened. “You work for my family.”

Luis glanced at Jack. “I work for the contract.”

Jack almost smiled. Almost.

Claire pulled out her phone. The screen was cracked near one corner.

“I found transfers,” she said. “Money moving out of the Mercer Foundation account.”

Jack stared at her.

The Mercer Foundation had been created by Claire’s mother, Evelyn, before cancer took her eleven years earlier. It funded emergency housing for women and children. Jack had never managed the money. Evelyn had placed the foundation under a joint board to keep it separate from family business.

One of those board seats had passed to Claire on her thirtieth birthday.

She was twenty-eight.

“She doesn’t control that account,” Jack said.

“Not yet,” Claire replied. “But someone is using documents that say I do.”

Margaret’s expression did not change.

Ethan’s did.

Just for a second.

That was enough.

Jack held out his hand. “Show me.”

Claire unlocked her phone.

Before she could open the files, the screen went black.
