Chapter 18 - The Last Lie

By midnight, the story had changed shape.

What began as a domestic confrontation now had financial records, forged signatures, illegal surveillance, a kidnapping allegation, and a foundation clause that could freeze disputed transactions.

Martin Shaw was found at his office.

Margaret was not with him.

Sheriff Porter questioned Martin for three hours.

At 2:10 a.m., she entered the conference room where Claire and Jack waited.

“He says Margaret forged the documents.”

Claire laughed without humor. “Convenient.”

“He also says Ethan knew more than he admitted.”

Jack looked toward the room where Ethan sat with counsel.

“What more?”

“Martin claims Ethan provided samples of Claire’s signature.”

Claire went still.

The Christmas cards.

The thank-you notes.

Ethan had access to all of them.

Porter continued. “Martin says Ethan thought the documents were only for contingency planning.”

Claire stood.

“I want to hear him say it.”

Porter hesitated, then arranged a supervised conversation.

Ethan entered with his attorney and sat across from Claire.

For the first time that day, he looked young.

Not innocent. Just stripped of polish.

Claire placed one of the practice signature sheets on the table.

“Did you give her samples?”

Ethan stared at it.

“Yes.”

Jack’s chair scraped back.

Claire raised a hand without looking at him.

She had this.

“What did you think she was doing?”

“Preparing documents in case you became unavailable.”

“Unavailable how?”

“Travel. Illness. Anything.”

Claire leaned forward.

“You watched your mother build a fake version of me on paper.”

“I didn’t think—”

“No. You didn’t.”

Ethan flinched.

She continued. “And today? The belt?”

His face twisted.

“I picked it up because it was on the chair. I wanted to scare you.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“You did.”

He looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

She breathed in slowly.

“I believe you’re sorry now.”

Hope flickered in his face.

Then she finished.

“That doesn’t make me safe with you.”

Hope disappeared.

A deputy entered and whispered to Porter.

The sheriff looked at Jack.

“They found Margaret.”

“Where?”

Porter’s expression tightened.

“Back at the mansion.”

Claire stared.

The sheriff added, “She’s in the main hall. And she says she’ll only speak to Claire.”
