Chapter 10 - The 11:47 Protocol

Emily twisted hard and drove her elbow backward.

It struck a shoulder.

The hand on her wrist loosened.

She dropped to the floor as someone shouted above her.

The flash device had left a white burn across her vision.

Shapes moved like shadows behind frosted glass.

A gunshot cracked.

Then another.

Victor’s voice: “Emily, left!”

She crawled left.

A body hit the floor where she had been.

Shaw dragged her behind an overturned table.

“Stay down.”

“I hate that sentence.”

“Complain after.”

The lights returned in strips.

Helena Cross stood near the broken doorway.

She was in her late sixties, silver hair swept back, white blouse under a black raincoat.

No weapon in her hands.

Two armed men were on the floor.

Three others had surrendered to federal agents pouring in from the stairwell.

Daniel leaned against the wall, one hand pressed to his upper arm.

Victor stood in front of Emily.

Helena looked almost bored.

“This could have been a conversation.”

Shaw raised her pistol.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Helena lifted both hands.

“Of course.”

Emily stood slowly.

Her ears rang.

“You said I’m the executioner.”

Helena looked at her.

“Carlo’s word, not mine.”

“What does it mean?”

“A final authority key.”

Victor said, “Stop.”

Emily stepped around him.

“No.”

The word came easily now.

She faced Helena.

“Explain it.”

Helena smiled faintly.

“Carlo built the network on distrust. He did not trust Victor. He did not trust me. He certainly did not trust Sarah. So the core cannot be permanently destroyed by any one custodian.”

Daniel, pale but conscious, said, “Except Emily.”

Helena nodded.

“Except Emily.”

Shaw said, “Why?”

“Because Carlo believed she would either become him or hate him enough to end everything.”

Emily felt nausea crawl up her throat.

“He designed my role before I could read.”

“He designed it before you were born.”

Victor’s hands curled into fists.

Helena looked at him.

“You should not look offended. You spent seventeen years keeping her close to the building where the key could eventually activate.”

Emily turned.

Victor looked at her.

“It wasn’t for the key.”

“You arranged my job?”

“No.”

“Sarah did.”

“Yes.”

“You knew after?”

“Six months after you were hired.”

“And you let me stay.”

Victor’s voice dropped.

“Because I could protect you here.”

“Or because you could watch me here.”

“Yes.”

Again that unbearable honesty.

Helena laughed softly.

“You see why Carlo liked him.”

Victor looked at her with open disgust.

“Carlo did not like anyone.”

Daniel slid down the wall and sat.

“We need the mirrors.”

Shaw called for a medic.

Daniel waved the approaching agent away.

“Later.”

Emily crouched beside him.

“Show me.”

He looked at her.

“The system?”

“The seven mirrors.”

Daniel nodded toward his watch.

“Your phone had a cached route before Shaw’s techs isolated it.”

Shaw said, “Our techs can recover that.”

Helena shook her head.

“No. The route changes at midnight.”

Emily checked the wall clock.

11:39 p.m.

Eight minutes.

Of course.

“Why 11:47?”

No one answered.

Emily looked at Victor.

“Tell me.”

He inhaled slowly.

“Elias died at 11:47.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“You said 11:52.”

“That was the fire alarm.”

Victor’s face tightened.

“Elias was shot at 11:47.”

Emily’s pulse thudded.

“You saw it.”

“Yes.”

“Who shot him?”

Victor looked at Helena.

Helena’s expression did not change.

Emily followed his gaze.

“No.”

Helena sighed.

“Carlo’s man pulled the trigger.”

“Name.”

“Michael Rusk.”

Shaw looked at her.

“Rusk died in 2014.”

“Yes.”

Victor said, “I killed him.”

The room went quiet.

Emily stared at him.

Victor did not look away.

“He shot Elias. I shot Rusk.”

Daniel whispered, “And you burned the house.”

“Yes.”

Helena added, “Then Victor told Carlo the evidence was destroyed and the child had died in the fire.”

Emily’s knees weakened.

That was the secret.

Not that Victor killed her father.

That he killed the man who did and then built a lie large enough to hide her inside it.

The wall clock changed.

11:42.

Daniel stood with help from Shaw.

“The 11:47 protocol is a synchronization event. All seven mirrors become addressable for sixty seconds. That is how Elias planned to copy everything before he died.”

Emily looked at the clock.

“Can we do it?”

“If we have the identity keys.”

“Which we do?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Sarah has at least one. Helena has one. Victor has one. I have two. You carry four possible roles, but the system will only recognize one role at a time.”

Emily looked at Helena.

“You’re helping.”

Shaw said, “She is in custody.”

Emily replied, “Then she can help in custody.”

Helena smiled.

“You do sound like Carlo when you’re tired.”

Emily stepped close enough that Helena stopped smiling.

“Say that again and I’ll let the clock run out.”

Helena studied her.

Then nodded.

“Fair.”

At 11:44, Shaw’s technicians connected Daniel’s device to an isolated laptop.

At 11:45, Victor entered a thirty-two-character passphrase he claimed not to have used in seventeen years.

At 11:46, Helena provided a biometric sample and a hardware token hidden inside the heel of her shoe.

Emily stared at the final prompt.

ROLE SELECTION.

DAUGHTER.

HEIR.

WITNESS.

EXECUTIONER.

Daniel said, “Pick witness first. It should give read-only access.”

Victor said, “Daughter.”

Helena said, “Executioner.”

Emily looked at all three.

Naturally.

Everyone had a preferred version of her.

The clock changed.

11:47.

Every device in the room made the same soft sound.

Click.

Emily selected WITNESS.

The screen went black.

Then a video appeared.

Elias Mercer sat at a kitchen table seventeen years younger, wearing the terrible brown sweater Emily remembered.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Emily, if you chose witness, you are already smarter than everyone standing around you.”

Daniel laughed through tears.

Victor looked away.

Emily could not breathe.

Elias continued.

“The ledger is not an inheritance. It is a crime scene.”

A map of seven mirrors appeared.

Six turned green.

One stayed red.

Daniel frowned.

“Mirror Seven is offline.”

Elias’s recording continued.

“And if Mirror Seven is missing, do not destroy the system.”

Emily stared at the red icon.

“Why?”

As if he could hear her, Elias answered.

“Because Mirror Seven contains the witness locations.”

Shaw went pale.

Helena whispered, “Sarah.”

The red icon blinked.

Then came online.

Location: MORETTI TOWER - FLOOR 42.

Emily looked at Victor.

His face hardened.

The tower they had escaped was not empty.

Sarah had gone back.

A timer appeared on screen.

13:00 MINUTES TO PURGE.

Elias’s recording ended with one sentence.

“If Sarah starts the purge, she thinks she is saving you.”

The clock began counting down.

12:59.

12:58.

Then the feed from Floor Forty-Two opened.

Sarah stood in Victor’s office beside the windows.

May you like

She looked into the camera.

“Come home, Emily.”
