Chapter 11 - Floor Forty-Two

“Come home, Emily.”

Sarah’s image filled the laptop screen.

Behind her, rain streaked the windows of Victor’s office.

The black file still lay open on the desk where the night had started.

A countdown glowed in the corner.

12:41.

12:40.

Special Agent Shaw said, “We lock down the building and send tactical.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Too slow.”

Victor was already moving toward the door.

Shaw blocked him.

“You are not going anywhere.”

Victor looked at her.

“Then arrest me in the car.”

Emily stood.

“I’m going.”

Three voices answered at once.

“No.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Unbelievable.”

She pointed at Daniel.

“You’re injured.”

At Victor.

“You’re a suspect.”

At Helena.

“You’re definitely under arrest.”

Then at Shaw.

“And your building just got hacked by a dead woman, so none of you have earned command of my evening.”

Shaw stared at her.

Emily continued.

“My mother asked for me. The system needs my role. We go together or I go without you.”

Victor nodded once.

Shaw muttered something Emily chose not to hear.

Nine minutes later they were in two armored SUVs racing toward Moretti Tower under police escort.

Daniel sat in the back with a pressure bandage around his arm, laptop open on his knees.

Emily sat beside him.

Victor rode in front.

The countdown dropped through eight minutes.

Daniel typed with one hand.

“Sarah is staging a selective purge.”

Emily looked at the screen.

Lines of data vanished and reappeared.

“What does selective mean?”

“She is deleting live operational links but preserving evidence.”

“That sounds like what we want.”

“Not if Mirror Seven goes first.”

Victor looked back.

“Witnesses?”

Daniel nodded.

“She may think deleting the locations protects them.”

Shaw’s voice came through the radio from the second SUV.

“It would also remove the only map we have to move those people before the custodians do.”

Emily looked at the timer.

6:52.

“Can we stop it remotely?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Executioner role only.”

Victor’s face went rigid.

“So Helena was right.”

Emily said, “Nobody gets points tonight.”

They reached the tower with 5:31 remaining.

The lobby was dark except for emergency lights.

No employees.

No security.

The marble floor reflected red EXIT signs like smears.

The elevators waited open.

Victor stopped at the threshold.

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

“They should not be open.”

Daniel checked the network.

“They’re parked for us.”

Sarah’s voice came through the lobby speakers.

“Elevator B.”

Victor looked toward a stairwell.

“Stairs.”

Sarah said, “You won’t make it.”

Emily entered Elevator B.

Victor swore and followed.

Daniel followed him.

Shaw and four agents entered last.

The doors closed.

Click.

The elevator rose.

Floor 17.

25.

33.

Emily watched the numbers.

Her reflection in the black glass looked like someone she did not recognize.

Pink blouse.

Victor’s dark coat.

Rain-damp hair.

A corporate badge no longer around her neck.

She wondered how much identity could be removed before a person finally became visible.

At Floor 42, the doors opened.

Sarah stood alone in the lobby.

No weapon.

No guards.

The gray maintenance uniform was gone.

She wore black trousers and a cream sweater.

Ordinary clothes.

Mother clothes, Emily thought, then hated herself for thinking it.

The countdown read 3:44.

Sarah looked at Daniel’s bandage.

“You’re hurt.”

Daniel laughed.

“That’s your opening?”

“You always hated hospitals.”

“You faked your death.”

“I know.”

“You let me think Emily was safer without me.”

“You were dangerous to her.”

“So were you.”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

The admission silenced him.

Emily stepped forward.

“Why are you purging?”

Sarah looked at her.

“Because Helena is not the only custodian. If the ledger survives tonight, they rebuild.”

“We can preserve evidence and separate the active systems.”

“Daniel told you that.”

“Dad did.”

Sarah’s face changed.

“You found the witness message.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know Mirror Seven cannot remain.”

“It has locations.”

“It has people marked like inventory.”

“And if you erase it, Helena’s network still knows some of those names.”

Sarah’s eyes moved to Helena, who entered behind the agents in restraints.

Helena smiled faintly.

Sarah’s face hardened.

“Exactly why she should never leave custody.”

Shaw said, “That part I can arrange.”

The countdown reached 2:51.

Emily walked into Victor’s office.

The green ledger sat open beside a terminal built into the desk.

Onscreen were four role buttons.

Daughter.

Heir.

Witness.

Executioner.

Sarah followed her.

“Choose executioner and confirm purge.”

“No.”

“Emily.”

“No more commands.”

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“You don’t understand what survives if you stop me.”

“I understand enough.”

“You think federal custody fixes this? You think a courtroom can contain people who have spent thirty years buying courtrooms?”

Shaw’s jaw tightened but she did not interrupt.

Emily looked at her mother.

“What did Dad want?”

Sarah looked away.

“What did Elias want?”

“To expose it.”

“Not destroy it?”

“He believed evidence mattered.”

“And you?”

“I watched evidence disappear.”

The timer reached 1:58.

Victor stood near the office door, silent.

Emily looked at him.

“What do you want?”

Victor gave a tired laugh.

“I lost the right to want anything from this system years ago.”

“That was not my question.”

He looked at the screen.

“I want the legitimate companies separated from the criminal network. I want everyone I paid to protect identified to Nora before another custodian reaches them. Then I want the rest burned.”

Daniel said, “That’s possible if we copy the evidence tree first.”

Sarah snapped, “And if the copy leaks?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then we live with the risk instead of deciding for everyone who gets erased.”

Sarah flinched.

The timer reached 1:12.

Emily touched WITNESS.

The screen asked for biometric confirmation.

Sarah grabbed her wrist.

“Emily, don’t.”

Emily looked at the hand.

Sarah released her.

“Sorry.”

Emily pressed her thumb to the scanner.

A progress bar appeared.

EVIDENCE COPY: 1%.

Timer: 0:54.

Daniel went pale.

“It won’t finish.”

“How long?”

“Three minutes.”

Sarah whispered, “I told you.”

Emily looked at the four roles.

Witness could copy.

Executioner could purge.

Heir might control.

Daughter.

What did daughter do?

She pressed it.

Victor stepped forward.

“Emily?”

The screen went black.

Then Elias appeared again.

“If you chose daughter, you finally ignored the job titles.”

Emily laughed through sudden tears.

The timer froze at 0:39.

Daniel stared.

“What did he do?”

Elias continued.

“Daughter is not a role. It is a pause.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

The system displayed a new option.

SEVENTEEN-MINUTE HUMAN REVIEW.

Emily looked at her mother.

“Dad built time into the system.”

Sarah whispered, “For you.”

“No. For whoever was being rushed.”

Emily selected it.

The purge stopped.

The evidence copy continued.

For the first time all night, no alarm sounded.

No doors locked.

No one moved.

Then Daniel’s laptop chimed.

He looked down.

His face drained.

“What?” Emily asked.

He turned the screen toward them.

A second purge had begun on Mirror Seven.

Remote origin: UNKNOWN.

Countdown: 2:00.

Helena Cross smiled.

“You forgot Carlo never trusted one executioner.”

Shaw turned toward her.

Helena lifted her cuffed hands.

“It isn’t me.”

Victor looked at the city lights beyond the glass.

“Then there’s another bloodline key.”

Sarah whispered a name Emily had never heard before.

“Adrian.”

Victor turned sharply.

“No.”

May you like

Sarah’s face went white.

“Carlo had another son.”
