Chapter 11 - A Thanksgiving Trap

"Why our house?" I asked.

Ellis brought up property records. "Because Raymond listed it as a temporary business receiving site without the owner's permission. He used an altered authorization letter."

"Marcus would have checked every signature."

"Raymond counted on you being too exhausted to check any."

The insult was not merely financial. He had taken the one place Marcus built for our child and turned it into a forwarding address for a criminal enterprise.

Investigators secured the property, and my parents were moved to a hotel while the house was examined. Harrison complained about the cost until an officer reminded him the hotel was already paid for. Eleanor packed three handbags but forgot her medication. When she finally called me, her voice was faint.

"I thought Raymond was helping the family," she said.

"You didn't ask whether he was hurting me."

"I know."

Two words couldn't mend seven months of coldness. But they were the first honest ones she'd offered.

The following morning, the scheduled delivery arrived at a remote receiving point after authorities quietly redirected it. No explosives. No movie-style chase. Inside were counterfeit electronics modules and falsified inspection papers. A concealed compartment held a satellite phone registered through Vale's network.

Ellis studied the call history. "This could connect the shipments to the people holding Marcus. We need the data analyzed before moving."

I stared at the handset. A simple cheap object could determine whether my husband had another sunrise.

Price had one more piece of news. "Raymond was seen crossing into a neighboring state. We have a warrant on the fraud-related offenses supported by the evidence. Agents are moving to locate him."

"And Marcus?"

Price looked at Ellis before answering. "We received a proposed exchange. Somebody will tell us where the prisoner is if the federal team drops the Fairmont investigation."

"That's not an exchange," I said. "It's extortion."

He nodded. "And they added a condition."

Ellis slid the message toward me.
