Chapter 5 - Orders and Doubt

I looked at Major Price. He met my eyes without flinching.
"If it's real, Marcus is warning me about you," I said.
"If it's fabricated, somebody wants you isolated," he replied. "Either way, don't surrender your judgment."
That was the first thing he'd said I trusted completely.
We reached a secure medical clinic outside town. Ortiz escorted me into an exam room while Price briefed security. An ultrasound showed a steady heartbeat. The quick, stubborn rhythm steadied mine.
"Your baby's doing well," Ortiz said. "But stress has a cost. You're allowed to say when you've had enough."
"I'm not sure anyone in the Army remembers that."
"Then consider it a medical order."
An hour later I joined Price in a conference room. Beside him sat Special Agent Naomi Ellis from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service. She carried a battered legal pad instead of an impressive briefcase.
"We're following suspicious payments tied to procurement contracts and overseas middlemen," Ellis explained. "Vale is a broker. Fairmont moved money through one of his networks. That doesn't prove Raymond knew about Black Harbor."
"But it makes his business relevant."
"Very relevant."
She showed me three transactions. The dates lined up with Marcus's final operation. One transfer had cleared forty-eight hours before his unit vanished. Another followed the day the military notified me he was missing.
"Raymond claims these were consulting fees," Ellis said. "We need the contracts and the people behind them."
"Why would Marcus's last message warn me about Price?"
Price leaned against the wall. "My father worked for the same defense contractor under investigation. He died three years ago. A person looking to smear me would find that convenient."
"You didn't mention that in the driveway."
"No," he said. "I should have."
I was grateful for the admission and furious I had needed it.
My phone buzzed with a text from Victoria: YOU HUMILIATED US. DAD SAYS COME HOME AND APOLOGIZE.
Then a second message arrived from an unknown number. No words. Just a photograph taken in the clinic parking lot. It showed Ortiz helping me from the SUV twenty minutes earlier.
