Chapter 11 - The Cut Brake Line

Before opening the file, Mara warned her not to expect one clean explanation. "People want one bad guy and one secret document," she said. "Real fraud leaves invoices, phone calls, frightened witnesses, and years of little decisions." Claire appreciated that she wasn't promising a miracle. Sophie sat close enough that their shoulders touched. Through the station windows, commuters hurried past carrying paper cups and overnight bags. The ordinary morning seemed almost offensive. Somewhere in town, people were worrying about missed trains and late paychecks while Claire prepared to watch her husband help plan her father's death.

Claire watched the clip without speaking. It had been taken from a garage security camera, time-stamped two nights before her father's crash. Adrian, younger but unmistakable, stood by the raised sedan and passed the cutters to Grant.

"They told me the brakes would fail on the downhill road," Grant said on the recording.

Adrian answered, "Then make sure nobody can tell it was deliberate."

Sophie covered her mouth.

"He knew my father before he met me," Claire said.

Mara nodded. "That's why he met you at the museum fundraiser. He didn't fall into your life by accident."

Alvarez copied the file using an evidence drive. "We still have to authenticate it," she warned. "A recording alone isn't the whole case. But this gives us a direction."

Claire recalled the fundraiser two years earlier: Adrian's kind smile, his attention to the foundation, his apparent interest in her father's restoration work. Every sweet question now sounded like an interview.

"What about Hannah?" Claire asked.

Mara swallowed. "She had a copy of the financial ledger. She was going to take it to a reporter. Eleanor found out."

The prepaid phone buzzed with a scheduled message. It displayed a location: THE OLD NET SHED, PIER 6, 5:30 A.M. A second line read, COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO SEE THOMAS.

"It's a trap," Sophie said.

"Maybe," Alvarez replied. "And that's why none of you are going alone."

Claire stared at the screen. Four years of grief pressed against one impossible possibility.
