Chapter 9 - A Stranger at the Motel

The motel's neon vacancy sign flickered in the rain. Claire had changed out of her wedding gown in the hospital restroom, with Sophie holding a trash bag under the ruined satin so it wouldn't touch the floor. For a moment, Claire had wanted to throw the whole dress away. Sophie stopped her. "It's evidence," she said. "And one day you can decide what it means instead of letting them decide for you." Claire had folded it carefully, even though her hands shook. The dress was sealed now in a police evidence bag, but she could still feel the heaviness of it around her knees.

Sophie met Claire outside a small motel near the interstate. She brought sneakers, jeans, and an oversized sweater, and hugged her without a single question about the wedding.

"I'm sorry I didn't believe you," Claire said.

"We'll fight about that when you can breathe."

Inside the room, Sophie introduced Mara Finch, a woman in her mid-thirties with cropped dark hair and a scar along her chin. Mara studied Claire for a moment, then offered a hand.

"Hannah was my older sister."

"Adrian said she died in an accident."

"She died after reporting that Vale Holdings had paid officials to reclassify protected shoreline as private industrial land. She had documents. A week later, her boat was found drifting."

"Was her body recovered?"

Mara nodded. "Unlike your father's, yes."

Claire sat on the bed. Mara opened a laptop and played a grainy security clip. Eleanor stood beside a marina gate, speaking to a man Claire recognized as Grant. Hannah walked into view carrying a small bag. Eleanor seized her wrist. The video ended before Claire could see what happened next.

"That's all?" Claire asked.

"The rest is in locker 414. Lucy was supposed to retrieve it and bring it to the wedding."

Sophie pulled the small silver key from Lucy's bag. "I got her permission before the paramedics took her."

A low vibration sounded from Mara's laptop. She opened a live feed from a camera outside the motel.

A black SUV rolled slowly into the parking lot. It stopped beside Claire's car.

Then its rear window opened, and a gloved hand lifted a photograph of Sophie.

On the back, written in thick red marker, were four words: WE KNOW HER ROOM.
