Chapter 15 - A Trade at the Conservatory

Sophie had spent years being the brave one in public and the worried one in private. When Thomas disappeared, she was still in college. Claire paid the bills and handled the funeral, while Sophie called every number in her father's phone, searching for a clue nobody else thought existed. Later, Claire resented her questions. She now understood them as a refusal to let the family story end too neatly. That was why the silence from Sophie's phone felt unbearable. If Eleanor wanted to punish Claire, she had chosen the one person Claire could not bear to lose.
Eleanor called Claire at 3:17 p.m.
"Your sister is comfortable," she said. "Let's keep her that way."
"Put her on."
"Don't be emotional. Bring the notebook to the old conservatory at the estate. No police."
"I don't have it."
"Then find something you can trade. You've always been resourceful."
The call ended. Claire played it for Alvarez, who requested an emergency warrant and a tactical team. The estate sat on private grounds surrounded by service roads, greenhouses, and acres of ornamental trees. There were too many places to hide one frightened woman.
Mara unfolded a floor plan of the conservatory. "I worked catering there last winter. There's a maintenance tunnel connecting the greenhouse to the old cellar."
"How do you know?" Claire asked.
"Lucy showed me. She used the tunnel to photograph the restricted records room."
Claire decided she would not arrive as a helpless daughter-in-law. She called Eleanor back on a recorded line.
"I have the original financial files," Claire said. "You get Sophie to the conservatory door, and I'll hand them over."
"Very wise."
"One more thing. I want Adrian there."
A short pause followed. "Why?"
"Because I want to look him in the eye when I tell him our marriage is over."
Eleanor laughed softly. "You've always mistaken pride for leverage."

Alvarez set the plan in motion. But two minutes before the meeting, Lucy called from the hospital with news that made everyone stop.
"There are two cellars," she said. "The one on the floor plan was sealed years ago. The other is directly beneath the conservatory. And there's no inside handle on its door."
