Chapter 19 - The Harbor Road

The command post was a mess of radios, maps, damp jackets, and half-drunk coffee. Claire stood at its edge with a blanket around her shoulders, listening to officers exchange road names. A younger deputy gently asked her to sit down. She shook her head. She had spent four years believing her father gone, then barely a day knowing he was alive. The possibility of losing him again made every minute feel like an accusation. Sophie leaned against her and whispered, "We're here. Whatever happens, we won't let them split us up again." Claire held her sister's hand so tightly their knuckles turned pale.

Thomas had gone to the estate after receiving a message claiming Claire was trapped. Eleanor intercepted him at the service entrance and forced him into the maintenance truck using a handgun taken from the estate's security office.

Alvarez sent patrol cars to block the harbor road. Claire and Sophie remained at the command post, watching the response through a live traffic camera.

The truck crossed a narrow bridge above the tidal channel. It swerved when a police vehicle appeared ahead. Eleanor stopped near the barrier and leaned out of the window with the gun, Thomas trapped beside her.

A negotiator's voice sounded over the radio. "Eleanor, we can talk. Put the weapon down."

Claire grabbed the microphone before anyone could stop her.

"Eleanor, you wanted the land. You wanted the money. You don't get to take my father too."

The negotiator reached for the microphone, then paused. Eleanor had lowered the gun slightly.

"Your father ruined everything," Eleanor shouted. "He could have signed the agreement!"

"He refused because people would get sick."

"People always get sick. Money is what keeps this world running."

Claire swallowed her anger. "You don't believe that. You just can't stand being told no."

For the first time, Eleanor didn't answer.

Thomas opened the passenger door and stepped out slowly, hands visible. Police rushed forward. Eleanor tried to reverse, but the truck's rear wheels skidded against the concrete barrier. She had nowhere to go. After a long minute, she laid the gun on the dashboard.

Claire watched officers take her into custody.

"It's over," Sophie whispered.

But Alvarez's phone rang again. It was Devon Reed, the accountant.

"We found the final transfer," he said. "The harbor parcel was sold at noon. Someone filed the deed under Claire's name."
