Chapter 19 - The Last Bennett Secret

Charles's final letter revealed the secret Eleanor had guarded for decades: Daniel was not his biological son.
Early in their marriage, Eleanor had become pregnant during an affair. Charles raised Daniel as his own and never exposed the truth. Years later, Eleanor used that secret to keep Charles protecting a son who had begun stealing from him.
"Dad kept covering for everyone until he couldn't anymore," Evelyn said.
The codicil still treated Daniel as Charles's son. A sealed memorandum made Charles's real intention clear: the trust was never about blood. It was about breaking Eleanor's control over the next generation.
Claire looked through the NICU glass at Owen. "So all of this happened because Charles tried to stop a cycle."
"And Mother would burn down the family before surrendering control," Evelyn said.
The hidden accounting archive gave prosecutors everything else.
Mercer was arrested at an Indiana motel. Vale faced kidnapping and conspiracy charges. Dr. Rusk agreed to testify. Pike cooperated.
Daniel pleaded guilty to attempted murder, conspiracy, and financial crimes.
Eleanor refused every deal.
At her preliminary hearing, her lawyer called the balcony collapse an accident and Daniel's attack an independent act.
Then prosecutors played a recording from Pike's archive.
Eleanor's voice filled the courtroom.
"Loosen the bolts. I don't want the rail to fail while Daniel is present. He's weak when he has time to think."
Vale answered, "And if she survives?"
"Then Daniel will finish what fear starts."
Claire closed her eyes. Eleanor had predicted exactly what Daniel would do.
Bail was denied.
Later, Rosa sat beside Owen's incubator with her arm in a sling.
"He is stubborn," she said.
"He gets that from me."
Maya entered carrying one more document.
"There's something you need to decide. Charles named you temporary chair of Bennett Development once the trust vested."
Claire stared at her.
May you like
Maya placed the document in her hands.
"You now control the company they tried to kill you for."
