Chapter 9 - Evelyn

Agent Ward found Evelyn Bennett at Cedar Vale Behavioral Residence outside Dayton under another last name.
"Why there?" Claire asked.
Rosa sat beside the hospital bed. "Evelyn found Daniel stealing from Charles years ago. Then her fiance died, she broke down, and Eleanor used it."
Claire thought of the fake therapy records. "This is what they do. They make witnesses look unstable."
That evening Daniel went on local television.
"My wife is experiencing a serious mental-health crisis," he told reporters outside the mansion. "She's being manipulated by a former employee and an aggressive attorney."
Claire threw the remote onto the blanket. "He tried to kill me, and I'm the unstable one?"
The next morning, Evelyn agreed to a secure video call. She was forty, thin, with Daniel's hazel eyes and none of his softness.
She studied Claire. "You married him."
"I did."
"I'm sorry."
Evelyn described discovering fake subcontractors and missing company money. Charles initially believed Eleanor when she called Evelyn confused. After Evelyn's fiance died, Eleanor petitioned to have her committed. Daniel signed it.
Claire felt sick. "You've been there twelve years?"
"Every review includes doctors Mother paid."
Agent Ward asked, "Did Charles contact you before he died?"
"He sent a letter. The facility confiscated it."
"What did it say?"
Evelyn looked directly at Claire.
"If Daniel ever had a child, that child would be in danger before birth and after."
Claire covered her belly.
Then Evelyn added, "But Dad said Daniel wasn't the person he feared most."
"Eleanor?"
Evelyn shook her head. "Someone inside the company."
At that moment Maya's laptop went black.
