Chapter 19 - The Trap

Valery was waiting in the hallway when I came out.
Her arms were folded tightly across her chest.
“You heard?” I asked.
She nodded.
“Monica arranged the crew assignment.”
“Why?”
“To scare him,” Valery said. “To remind him she could reach into his life whenever she wanted.”
I leaned against the wall.
“So the whole thing was a trap.”
“Maybe.”
“For him?”
“For both of us.”
Valery looked exhausted now. The perfect bun had loosened. Her blue scarf was gone.
“She wanted Daniel nervous enough to finish the transfer in Vancouver. Seeing me was supposed to tell him she still knew everything about his past.”
I thought of his face at the jet door.
The instant fear.
He hadn’t been afraid of Valery.
He had been afraid of what her presence meant.
Agent Ortiz joined us.
“Monica also confessed that the warehouse fire connected to Valery’s mother was deliberate property damage carried out by an associate. No one was inside.”
Valery closed her eyes.
Her mother had spent years believing every disaster was her own fault.
It hadn’t been.
Ortiz continued. “The USB contains account ledgers, aliases, transaction records, and communications. It may help recover money for multiple victims.”
Valery looked at me.
“You saved it.”
“You took it.”
“You saw it first.”
For the first time all day, we both smiled.
It was not friendship yet. It was something stranger and maybe stronger: two people standing on opposite sides of the same wreckage, finally able to point at the person who caused it. I realized I had expected Valery to hate me for being the woman who came after her. Instead, she had protected me at thirty thousand feet before she even knew whether I would believe her. That mattered.
Then Ortiz’s phone rang.
She listened for less than thirty seconds.
Her expression changed.
“What?” I asked.
She ended the call.
“Daniel wants to speak to you before he’s moved.”
“No.”
Then she added, “He says there’s one account Monica doesn’t know about.”
I stopped.
“How much?”
Ortiz looked at me.
“Enough to repay Valery’s mother’s estate and several other victims.”
May you like
Valery went completely still.
