Chapter 5 - The Suitcase

The jet moved away from the terminal.
I looked toward the closed door.
Too late.
Daniel sat down across from me and fastened his seat belt with controlled, efficient movements.
“Sit,” he said.
I remained standing until Valery gently touched my elbow.
“For takeoff, please.”
Her voice was professional again, but her eyes said something else.
Stay alert.
I sat beside the window. Daniel took the seat opposite me, his black suitcase upright between his knees.
He had never done that before.
He usually handed luggage to the crew.
The engines rose.
As the jet accelerated, I watched his hand resting on the case.
Protective.
Possessive.
After takeoff, Daniel unbuckled first.
“I need the restroom.”
He took the suitcase with him.
Valery watched him walk down the cabin.
“He won’t fit that in the lavatory comfortably,” she said.
“Apparently comfort is not the priority.”
She sat across from me.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. Tell me everything.”
She looked toward the back of the jet.
“I met him when I was twenty-three. He called himself Adam Blake. Said he consulted for aviation companies. He learned everything about my mother’s business. Her vendors. Banking routines. Password habits.”
“How long were you together?”
“Eighteen months.”
I swallowed.
Daniel and I had dated fourteen months before marrying.
Almost the same timeline.
Valery continued. “The morning he disappeared, my mother’s company account was emptied in pieces. None of the transfers were large enough to trigger the bank’s old fraud system.”
Three transfers.
$14,900 each, almost.
I looked down at my phone.
Same pattern.
A sound came from the rear cabin.
A hard plastic snap.
Valery stood.
Daniel came back carrying the suitcase.
The outer zipper was open now.
A strip of torn white paper stuck from one side.
He saw me looking and immediately pushed it inside.
“What’s in the suitcase?” I asked.
“Clothes.”
“Open it.”
“No.”
Valery’s eyes dropped to the broken zipper seal.
Then she said, “That case was locked when you boarded.”
Daniel smiled at her.

“You always did notice too much.”
