Chapter 2 - The Name He Buried

“Enough,” Daniel said.
His voice was low, almost polite, which was how he sounded when he was furious.
Valery didn’t move.
I did.
I stepped around him.
“What should I know?” I asked.
Daniel caught my wrist—not hard, but fast.
“Claire.”
I looked down at his hand.
He released me immediately.
Valery noticed.
“So that part hasn’t changed,” she said.
Daniel’s face tightened. “Don’t do this.”
“Do what?” I asked. “Recognize you?”
The pilots were up front behind the cockpit door. A second attendant was loading bottled water into a cabinet farther down the cabin. Nobody else seemed to understand that my marriage had just cracked open beside the champagne cooler.
Daniel forced a laugh.
“This is ridiculous. Valery and I dated briefly in our twenties.”
Valery looked at him.
“My mother called it an engagement.”
My stomach dropped.
Daniel turned toward me. “It was never official.”
“You gave me a ring,” Valery said.
“That was fifteen years ago.”
“Twelve.”
Silence.
That correction landed harder than the accusation.
Daniel had told me he spent those years building logistics companies in Singapore and Dubai. He had shown me pictures. Offices. Hotels. Conferences.
I suddenly wondered who had taken the pictures.
Valery folded her hands again.
“He told me his name was Adam Blake.”
I stared at Daniel.
He smiled without humor. “A nickname.”
“Adam Blake is a nickname?”
“Long story.”
“Good,” I said. “We have a flight to Napa.”
Valery’s eyes narrowed.
“Napa?”
Daniel looked at her sharply.
I felt another shift in the room.
“We’re going for our anniversary,” I said.
Valery’s professional expression vanished.
“No, you’re not.”
Daniel stepped forward. “Valery.”
She ignored him.
“This aircraft filed for Santa Rosa, then onward to Vancouver tonight.”
I turned to Daniel.
He didn’t blink.
He didn’t speak.
And suddenly the black suitcase beside him looked less like luggage and more like evidence.

I thought about how carefully he had packed that morning. Usually he asked me where his charger was, forgot socks, laughed while I repacked his shirts. Today he had zipped the case alone in his study and carried it downstairs himself. When I offered to put my makeup bag inside, he had said there was no room. There had been room. He simply hadn’t wanted me near it.
