Chapter 10 - Five Hundred Dollars

By three in the afternoon, Emily’s access to Vance & Hayes was suspended.

The red button she had pressed that morning had started the avalanche.

Now she no longer controlled where it fell.

Daniel called from a new number.

She answered on Paul’s secure phone.

“Having fun?” he asked.

“You lied to a judge.”

“I protected my company.”

“You forged my signature.”

“Prove it.”

“You framed Noah.”

“Prove it.”

“You broke into my phone.”

“You gave me the passcode four years ago.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Daniel laughed softly. “You always thought access meant trust. That’s your problem.”

“My problem is that I married you.”

“No, your problem is you finally tried to act like a Vance after spending ten years pretending you were above the money.”

That landed because it was partly true.

Emily had walked away from the family bank at twenty-three. She became an architectural project manager, married Daniel, and told herself she wanted an ordinary life.

Then she quit work to care for her grandfather during his final year.

Daniel had admired her independence until it stopped being useful to him.

“What do you want?” she asked.

“Come home. Withdraw the audit. Tell the court you panicked.”

“And then?”

“We fix this.”

“Five hundred a month?”

Daniel sighed. “You’re being dramatic.”

“No. For the first time all day, I’m being very clear.”

She hung up.

Margaret entered with a stack of records.

“We may have a way around the order.”

“How?”

“The trust has an emergency protector clause. If the primary beneficiary is suspended, authority transfers temporarily to the independent protector.”

“Who is that?”

Margaret slid the page across the table.

Emily stared.

The protector was not Margaret.

Not Paul.

Not any Vance.

It was Robert Carter.

Noah’s dead father.

And according to a handwritten amendment filed one month before Robert died, he had named a successor.

Noah read the successor’s name and went pale.

“Emily,” he said, “I know this person.”

She looked down.

May you like

The name was Dr. Jonathan Hayes.

Her supposedly dead father.
