Chapter 19 - The Choice

Daniel looked worse than Emily had ever seen him.
No jacket. Shirt untucked. Bruise along one cheek.
He raised both hands.
“I didn’t come with him.”
Reed laughed. “You came because I told you I could keep your brother out of prison.”
Emily’s stomach turned.
Daniel looked at her. “Noah didn’t know.”
“I know.”
“I need that in writing.”
“This is not the time.”
“It’s the only time I have.”
Reed snapped, “Enough.”
He pulled a handgun from inside his coat and pointed it toward the floor beside Susan.
Susan flinched.
Emily’s voice stayed flat. “You shoot anyone and you never get the key.”
Reed studied her.
Then he smiled. “Charles did teach you something.”
Emily opened the velvet box.
The silver ring lay inside.
Reed stepped forward.
Daniel moved first.
He kicked a metal chair into Reed’s path.
The gun fired into the concrete floor.
Susan dropped.
Emily lunged toward her mother.
The warehouse doors exploded inward as federal agents entered.
“Gun down!”
Reed ran for a side exit.
Daniel tackled him before he reached it.
The two men crashed into a stack of empty pallets.
Agents swarmed them.
Seconds later Reed was in handcuffs.
Daniel lay on the floor, breathing hard.
An agent rolled him over and cuffed him too.
He looked at Emily.
“Your mom okay?”
Emily held Susan against her shoulder.
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked relieved.
Then he said, “The Northstar password is RobertC_1971. The recovery phrase is in my basement desk.”
Emily stared at him.
“Why tell me now?”
“Because I’m done pretending I can still win.”
Agents lifted him to his feet.
As they led him past Emily, he stopped.
“I did love you.”
She looked at him for a long time.
“I believe you.”
His face broke slightly.
Emily continued, “That’s what makes the rest of it worse.”
He nodded once.
Then he was gone.
Susan clung to Emily.
Jonathan arrived moments later and stopped when he saw them together.
No one ran toward him.
No one forgave him.
But Susan held out one shaking hand.
Jonathan took it.
Emily looked down at the ring in the velvet box.
The master key had never been about money.
It was evidence.
And when the archive opened that night, it contained one final file none of them expected.
A video recorded by Charles Vance six months before his death.
