Chapter 2 - The Name in the Trust

Emily stared at the sentence until the words stopped looking like English.

SECONDARY BENEFICIARY ALERT SENT.

She opened the trust tree.

Her grandfather, Charles Vance, had built Vance & Hayes from a two-room regional bank into a private lending firm that financed construction, shipping, and commercial real estate across seven states. When he died, he left most voting power in a dynasty trust designed to keep family money out of impulsive marriages and bad business deals.

Emily had always hated that sentence in the documents.

Now she understood why he wrote it.

She clicked BENEFICIARY HISTORY.

Emily Vance Hayes - Primary.

A second line appeared beneath hers.

Noah Carter - Contingent.

Emily stopped breathing.

Noah was Daniel’s younger brother.

The brother Daniel claimed he had not spoken to in six years.

The basement door opened.

Emily closed the window so quickly the cursor jumped.

Daniel came back carrying a black binder.

“You still here?” he asked.

“I live here.”

“For now, with the way you’re acting.”

She looked at him.

Daniel paused, almost noticing something different in her face.

Then his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen.

His smirk disappeared.

“What?” Emily asked.

“Nothing.”

He answered. “Carter.”

A man spoke loudly enough that Emily could hear the panic but not the words.

Daniel’s shoulders tightened.

“No, no, that’s impossible. We’re current.”

More shouting.

Daniel turned away.

“I said don’t call anyone. I’ll handle it.”

He ended the call.

Emily took a slow sip of coffee.

“Problem?”

Daniel looked at her for a long moment. “Temporary banking error.”

“Those happen.”

He grabbed his keys.

“Where are you going?”

“To work.”

“It’s Sunday.”

“I know what day it is, Emily.”

The front door slammed.

The second his truck left the driveway, Emily reopened the trust file.

She clicked Noah’s name.

There was one document attached.

A notarized beneficiary amendment dated eight months earlier.

Emily read the signature line.

Her own name was there.

The signature was perfect.

And completely fake.
