Chapter 12 - The Lie Daniel Told

"You have sixty seconds," I told Daniel.

Nathan closed the conference room door.

Priya remained beside the monitor.

Martin stayed seated, which irritated me enough that I pointed at him.

"You too. Out."

"Claire—"

"Out."

He left.

Daniel waited until the latch clicked.

Then he took a breath.

"Chloe contacted me first."

"Forty-eight seconds."

"She emailed my private Sterling address in July. She said her father was using Ethan to access corporate logistics and that she wanted a way out."

"You didn't tell me."

"She said she would disappear if you knew."

"So you chose her trust over mine."

"I chose the source."

That hurt more than I expected because it sounded like something I would have said.

"Thirty seconds."

Daniel pulled out his phone and placed it on the table.

"Read the messages. All of them. I never met her alone. I never gave her money. I asked for documents, names, recordings. I was trying to build something you could use."

"While she slept with my husband in my house."

His voice broke slightly.

"Yes."

"And you watched me walk into that house after Dallas."

"I didn't know they were changing the locks that night."

I thought of him opening the umbrella in the rain.

Madam President? Why are you standing on the street with your bags?

His shock had looked real.

Maybe it was.

"Why keep it from Nathan?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Because Chloe said Gabriel had someone inside legal."

Nathan's eyebrows rose.

"Did she name them?"

"No."

"Useful."

"She gave me enough accurate information to justify caution."

Priya opened the message archive.

"The metadata supports Daniel's timeline. Chloe initiated contact. He repeatedly asked for documentary evidence. No romantic content, no financial transfers."

I stared at Daniel.

"You still lied to me."

"Yes."

No defense.

That helped.

Not enough.

"You're off my personal detail until this is over. Priya gets all your devices. You work through Nathan."

Daniel nodded once.

"Understood."

His face showed pain, but he did not ask me to make him feel better.

That helped too.

Chloe was brought upstairs.

She looked from Daniel to me and immediately understood.

"You found the messages."

"Yes."

"He was protecting me."

"Do not defend him."

She stopped.

"Tell me what you know about the founder token."

Chloe's fingers tightened around the hem of her sweatshirt.

"Dad said the forged signatures were only good for routine approvals. For founder-level actions, they needed a physical token or trust instrument."

"Did he have it?"

"He thought Margaret did."

"The black attaché case?"

Chloe nodded.

"She brought it to a meeting in Austin. Dad opened it and got furious. Whatever he expected wasn't there."

"What was?"

"Old stock certificates. A bronze key. Your father's seal."

"No trust instrument."

"No. Margaret kept saying the clock had a hidden fourth gear, but she'd opened the back and found nothing."

I remembered the note.

When the third beat fails, open the fourth gear.

What if "gear" did not mean the clock's mechanism?

My father liked layered instructions.

He taught me chess by hiding candy in the fourth drawer of whatever desk we used.

Fourth file.

Fourth key.

Fourth gear could mean the fourth winding position.

Or the fourth brass gear.

Or something that only appeared after the third beat failed.

Nathan's phone rang.

He listened, then swore.

"What?"

"Ethan is gone."

My stomach dropped.

"From the hotel?"

"Security camera shows him opening the door at 5:02. No forced entry. No alarm. He walked out willingly."

"With whom?"

Nathan turned his phone toward me.

A still frame showed Ethan in the hallway.

Facing a woman.

Gray coat.

Pearls.

Margaret.

Ethan stepped into the elevator with his mother like a child being taken home.

"Track her car," I said.

Priya shook her head.

"Her registered vehicle is still at River Oaks."

"Phone?"

"Off."

Chloe whispered, "I know where she might take him."

Everyone looked at her.

"My father has an old bonded warehouse near the Ship Channel. He stopped using it after Harvey. Margaret met him there twice."

Nathan grabbed his coat.

"Address."

Chloe wrote it down.

I reached for my bag.

Nathan blocked me.

"No."

"My husband is there."

"Your husband tried to buy you off with twenty-five hundred dollars yesterday."

"And now he is a witness in an attempted murder and corporate fraud case. This isn't about our marriage."

Nathan stared at me.

Then gave up arguing.

"You stay behind law enforcement."

"Fine."

"I mean it."

"I heard you."

Outside, rain hammered the windows so hard the city disappeared.

At 5:41, Priya found one signal near the warehouse.

Ethan's phone.

It transmitted for nine seconds.

Along with a text to me.
