Chapter 7 - Emergency Session

I kept my face still.

Gabriel was watching me.

So was Martin.

So were five directors who had just voted to strip away the control my father spent forty years building.

Nathan's message burned on my screen.

RESOLUTION 47 DOES NOT SUSPEND THE TRUST. IT ACTIVATES IT.

I locked the phone and slid it under my notebook.

"Is there anything else?" Harlan asked.

"Yes," I said. "Preserve every device in this room."

Gabriel smiled. "Dramatic."

"Specific."

Martin looked down.

That told me more than his face had all afternoon.

After the meeting, I waited until the last director left before closing the doors.

Nathan stood beside them.

Daniel stayed near the glass wall.

Martin remained seated.

"How long?" I asked him.

He looked tired enough to be twenty years older.

"How long what?"

"How long have you known Mercer was using our network?"

Martin stared at the table.

"Three months."

Daniel swore.

I felt no urge to raise my voice.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I did not know how deep it went. Because every time I opened a door, someone already knew I had touched the handle. Because two directors received photos of their children within forty-eight hours of asking questions."

Nathan stepped forward. "That's extortion."

"Yes."

"And you hid it from the president?"

Martin looked at me.

"I was trying to determine who around her was compromised."

My jaw tightened.

"You included me in that list?"

"For six hours. Then I watched footage of you in Singapore while your terminal approved a Houston transfer."

Daniel crossed his arms. "M.V. appears in Ethan Lawson's records."

Martin did not flinch.

"I met Ethan twice."

"About what?"

"To tell him to stop using Sterling-linked vendors. The first time he laughed. The second time he told me Gabriel Mercer had promised him a new distribution division and a board seat."

I shut my eyes for half a second.

Of course.

Ethan had always wanted status more than money.

Money could be spent.

Status could be displayed.

"Did you threaten him?" I asked.

"I told him he was being used. He said I was jealous because Gabriel had chosen him."

That sounded so perfectly Ethan I almost felt sick.

"Why do his notes call you M.V.?"

"Because he was tracking everyone he thought stood between him and the promotion. I was one of them."

Nathan placed the old bylaw copy on the table.

"Tell us what you know about Resolution 47."

Martin's eyes moved to the page.

Then to me.

"Your father hated emergency governance clauses. He said emergencies were when thieves wore ties."

A painful laugh escaped me.

That was exactly how my father talked.

"He built a counterweight," Martin continued. "If founder voting rights were ever suspended under Resolution 47, control did not pass to the ordinary board. It shifted temporarily into a founder trust."

"Who controls the trust?"

"The instrument controls it."

"That's not an answer."

"Because I never saw the instrument."

Nathan tapped the cross-reference.

"11-D."

Martin nodded.

"The founder schedule."

I thought of the clock.

Item 11-C.

The seal, 11-B.

What was 11-A?

Daniel searched the scanned inventory.

"11-A is a bronze key. Description: founder archive key, ceremonial. Location listed as clock cabinet."

"Clock cabinet?" I asked.

"That's what it says."

The antique clock had a narrow lower cabinet beneath the pendulum.

I had opened it dozens of times.

There was no key.

Or I had never noticed one.

Nathan's phone rang.

He stepped aside and answered.

Martin leaned closer to me.

"Claire, Gabriel is not doing this just for contracts."

"What does he want?"

"Sterling Crest's port access."

"We don't own a port."

"No. We own long-term berth priority at three Gulf terminals through old infrastructure agreements. If Mercer controls the company, he controls shipping windows worth more than his entire import business."

"And whatever is inside the containers."

Martin nodded.

"Exactly."

Nathan returned.

"We have another problem."

"Of course we do."

"The special investigator has issued a hold preventing you from removing founder-schedule property from River Oaks."

"Why?"

"They claim the house is potential evidence."

Daniel frowned. "That means the clock stays there."

"With Ethan and Margaret," I said.

Martin's face tightened.

"Then secure the house."

"We already have property security outside."

"Not enough."

He pushed back his chair.

"Gabriel collects old control systems. He knows what physical instruments mean. If he learns 11-D is tied to that clock—"

My phone rang.

Ethan.

I answered on speaker.

"What?"

His voice came out low and frightened.

"Claire, Mom is tearing the house apart."

I stood.

"Where?"

"Your father's clock. She has a screwdriver and she keeps saying there has to be a second panel."

Behind him, faint through the phone, I heard metal strike wood.

Tick.

Tick.

Silence.

Tick.

Then Margaret shouted.

"Ethan, give me that phone!"

A crash.

The call ended.

Daniel was already grabbing his jacket.

May you like

I looked at Nathan.

"We're going home."
