Chapter 13 - The BlackoutThe power outage had seemed like rescue. Now it looked like part of the plan.

Nicole gave Detective Bell the tablet. The restored video showed me on the floor, Trent gripping the stick, and Helen watching with a kind of bored impatience. Richard's coffee cup scraped against the marble.

At 5:07, Helen took out her phone. The recording caught her saying, "Do it now."

A minute later, darkness swallowed the kitchen.

"Why would she cut the power?" Alex asked.

"To stop the cameras," I said, remembering the note about 4:52.

Bell shook her head. "The cameras were disabled earlier. The outage could have another purpose."

The utility crew's report clarified part of the mystery: a private disconnect switch had been operated at the property. It wasn't a transformer failure, and the electrician who accompanied Mercer hadn't touched it until after police arrived.

Howard had another clue. Richard recently hired a contractor to install backup power for a locked storage room adjoining the garage. The kitchen could go dark while that room stayed live.

Why protect a storage room from a power outage you intended to cause?

With proper authorization, investigators inspected it. They found shelves of company records and a small locked cabinet. Inside were drives containing scans of business documents and household surveillance exports.

But the most disturbing discovery was a list titled CONTINGENCIES. One line read: IF ALERT RECEIVED, DISCONNECT HOUSE AND MOVE STORAGE PACKAGE.

"They knew I might call for help," I whispered.

The listing had been created months earlier.

It changed how I remembered the blackout. Helen hadn't summoned rescuers by mistake. She had ordered the lights cut to protect records and perhaps buy time for someone to move them.

Bell showed me the final line of the document, then watched my face.
