Chapter 19 - The Last BargainNicole's recording didn't reveal a villain confessing everything neatly. It showed a frightened family member being pressured to change her statement.

Trent promised her a new car and a job in the family business if she'd say I'd staged the scene in the kitchen. When she refused, he said Richard would cut her off permanently.

"Then let him," she replied.

It was the first time I'd heard Nicole stand up to her brother. Her voice shook throughout, but she never changed her answer.

Prosecutors evaluated the recording alongside the other evidence. Charges followed against Trent in connection with the threats and abuse allegations. Richard faced separate financial allegations. The cases would take time, and none of us could predict every result.

The property dispute began moving in my favor. Forensic review supported the conclusion that my signature on the transfer deed had been forged. The court issued orders protecting the building while the civil case continued.

I returned to Maple Street with Elena and Rosa on an afternoon that smelled of wet leaves. The bookstore bell jingled when we entered. Rosa handed me a cup of coffee and pointed toward a small shelf of children's books.

"Your mother used to sit right there," she said, "and read to anyone who wanted to listen."

I ran my fingers along the spines. I pictured Charlotte here someday, standing on tiptoe to reach a story too big for her hands.

Outside, Trent was waiting on the sidewalk beyond the boundary of where he was permitted to approach me. I did not move toward him. Elena contacted the appropriate authorities about his presence.

From the doorway, he called my name once.

"Emily, we can fix this."

I used to hear those words and imagine the marriage I wanted. That day I heard only a request that I forget the marriage I'd actually lived.

I turned back toward the bookstore. My phone buzzed with a message from the hospital scheduling my next checkup.

At the bottom of the screen was a missed call from an unknown number.

The voicemail lasted seven seconds.

"This is Helen," the voice said. "There's one thing you still don't know about Richard."
