Chapter 18 - The Longest NightThe false visitor badge was reported immediately. The hospital reviewed its access procedures and flagged the concern. Paige resigned from the clinic while investigators examined the records. I wanted quick, cinematic justice. Real accountability moved through interviews, documents, and long hours of waiting.

Then, late one rainy evening, a sharp pain tightened across my stomach.

"Alex," I called.

He was at the table sorting legal mail. One look at my face and he reached for his keys.

We followed the medical team's instructions and went straight to the hospital. I counted contractions in the passenger seat and whispered to Charlotte that we were both allowed to be scared.

At triage, a nurse guided me into a quiet room. Tests showed I needed observation for symptoms of possible preterm labor. Nobody made promises. The doctor explained the next steps and stayed until my questions were answered.

Alex sat beside me with Mom's unfinished blanket in his lap. "You want a bad hardware-store story?"

"Not your paint sale again."

"A guy tried to return a ladder he'd painted himself."

I laughed, then winced as another contraction came. He stopped joking and held my hand.

The hours stretched. Medication and rest helped, and by morning the contractions had eased. Charlotte's heartbeat remained reassuring. Relief arrived slowly, like sunlight entering a room through blinds.

At dawn, Elena called. Investigators had executed additional warrants in the financial case, and several records implicated Richard in the forged transfer. She cautioned that charges and convictions were different things.

"What about Trent?" I asked.

"There's an update concerning him too."

I heard papers shuffle.

"He tried to contact a witness despite the warnings. The witness saved everything."

"Who?"

"Nicole," Elena said. "And this time, she recorded the entire conversation."
