Chapter 14 - The Homes on the HillNina brought the evidence to the district attorney, along with the vent photographs, hospital records, and witness accounts. The prosecutor authorized additional warrants and emergency referrals to housing inspectors.

Before dawn, inspectors moved through every occupied property tied to Vale Development. They found disconnected alarms, illegal partitions, broken heaters, and families who had been told eviction was the price of complaining.

At unit nine, an elderly man answered with an oxygen tube under his nose. At unit twelve, a mother had hung a blanket over a cracked window to keep her toddler warm. Nobody had thought their problems connected.

Helen Price opened the shelter for displaced tenants. Volunteers brought coffee, coats, and folding cribs. Ben Alvarez walked from table to table, asking people what repairs they'd reported and who had ignored them.

“Somebody should have listened,” he told a father holding a sleeping boy.

The father shook his head. “We told them. They said we were lucky to have a roof.”

By noon, local news stations were outside the courthouse. Vale's company issued a statement denying criminal wrongdoing and blaming subcontractors.

At the hospital, Ellie watched a short report on a muted television. She saw the fence around Briar Hollow and the red door of her old basement.

“Are we going home?” she asked Ruth.

“No, sweetheart. That house isn't safe.”

“Where are my drawings?”

“We'll get what we can. We can make more.”

Ellie's eyes filled. “Mama worked so hard for that house.”

Ruth hugged her. “Your mama worked hard for you. The house was never the important part.”

Dr. Bennett came in smiling for the first time that week. Noah was gaining weight. Rose no longer required oxygen support. They weren't ready for discharge, but both had turned a corner.

Ellie clapped once, then covered her mouth, embarrassed by her own happiness.

“It's okay to be happy,” the doctor said.

At the same moment, Marcus received a message from the team searching Glenn Rusk's truck. They'd found the black equipment case and Mara's missing drive. But on the passenger seat lay printed maps of three routes out of town, one with the hospital circled.

Glenn was missing, and the last security camera to catch him showed him entering the hospital parking garage.
