Chapter 8 - The Laundromat DoorThe contractor had a receipt, a work order, and a reason for being there. Nina had seen enough forged paperwork to distrust all three.

She obtained surveillance from the grocery store across the street. At 7:12 a.m., before any public complaint had named the laundromat, Glenn Rusk carried a black equipment case to his truck. A second man carried a plastic storage tub marked DONATIONS.
Nina sent the footage to her lieutenant. “Rusk knew what to search for.”
“Can you prove what was in the case?”
“Not yet.”
She drove to the laundromat. The owner, Mr. Cho, unlocked the back room. Yellow paint peeled above dryers older than Nina. Ellie had been right about the color. A low cupboard stood beside a leaking pipe, its latch broken.
“Kids used to shelter back here in storms,” Mr. Cho said. “Mara would wait for the bus with them. I let her.”
Nina noticed a loose piece of tile. Beneath it was a receipt wrapped in wax paper. On the back, Mara had scrawled three numbers and a date. On the front was a payment from Vale Development to a city inspection consultant.
“That's not an invoice,” Nina said. “That's a payoff disguised as a safety audit.”
Mr. Cho looked sick. “She told me people could die.”
“They already have.”
At the hospital, Elena took a call from a woman identifying herself as Mara's sister, Caroline West. She wanted immediate custody of Ellie and access to the twins.
“I've been trying to reach Mara for months,” Caroline insisted. “She's unstable. She's been making things up about her landlord.”
Elena checked the emergency contacts. No Caroline West.
“Can you bring identification and proof of relationship?”
“Are you accusing me of lying?”
“I'm protecting three children.”
Caroline hung up.
Minutes later, a hospital security guard radioed that an unfamiliar woman had tried to enter the twins' ward using a visitor badge belonging to an employee who was off duty.
Security stopped her. The woman dropped a small padded envelope before running toward the elevators.

The envelope held three recent photographs of Ellie asleep in her hospital bed.
