Chapter 17 - A Voice in CourtThe courthouse lobby smelled of coffee and floor polish. Elena had prepared the placement records. Ruth had gathered references, medical information, and photographs of the home where Aaron grew up. Mara, still hospitalized, joined by video with a doctor nearby.

Victor's lawyers argued that the family arrangement had been rushed and that a more local placement deserved consideration. They did not represent the children, but they claimed to raise concerns about their welfare.
The judge looked over her glasses. “Counsel, explain your client's interest in the custody of these children.”
The attorney shifted. “Mr. Vale's company previously provided housing to the mother. He wishes to ensure appropriate care.”
“Isn't your client connected to the property now under criminal investigation?”
“That matter is disputed.”
“Then we'll keep it separate from the children's immediate needs,” the judge said. “I will hear the social worker.”
Elena described the hospital care, the family reunification plan, Ruth's home assessment, and the importance of keeping the siblings together. She did not turn Ellie's fear into a performance.
From the video screen Mara said, “I want my children with my mother-in-law while I heal. Ruth knows them. I trust her.”
The judge nodded. “I've read your statement, Ms. Parker.”
Ellie wasn't required to testify. She sat outside with Andrea, who had taken personal leave to support the family. When Ruth came out, Ellie sprang to her feet.
“Are we staying together?”
“For now, yes,” Ruth said, smiling through tears. “And we're working on getting your mama home.”
The judge had continued the protective placement with Ruth and ordered appropriate agency oversight. It was a careful decision, not a fairy-tale shortcut.
Outside, reporters shouted questions. Marcus guided the family away from the cameras.
Nina approached carrying a sealed evidence inventory. “The prosecutor is filing charges against Glenn,” she told Mara quietly. “And there are developments involving Vale.”
“What developments?” Mara asked.
Nina glanced at Ruth, then Ellie. “We found a second ledger. The payments weren't just for silence. Somebody was buying the fire inspection records before Aaron died.”

The newest name in the ledger belonged to a person Nina had trusted throughout the investigation.
