Chapter 11 - The House They Tried to Take

We left under the officers' watch, with the red box and Sophie's coat zipped to her chin. Daniel followed us onto the porch.
"Claire, wait."
"Don't," I said.
"I didn't know about the auction."
"You knew enough to warn me about the papers."
"I knew Mom was trying to get you to sign something. I didn't know she'd filed the loan."
Sophie stood by the car, studying her shoes. "Dad, why didn't you tell Mommy?"
He looked at her for a long time. "Because I was scared," he finally said.
"I get scared, too," Sophie answered. "I still tell her."
Daniel shut his eyes. I buckled Sophie in and drove away before he could find another excuse.
The next morning, while half the neighborhood slept in after Christmas, Nina walked me through the foreclosure paperwork. The lien had been assigned to a private lender that accepted electronic authorization from our former business account. That was how Margaret had bypassed the usual scrutiny.
"There are grounds to challenge it," Nina said. "We can seek emergency relief, but we must move fast."
I called the lender's servicing department and asked for copies of every notice. I requested a fraud review. I pulled bank statements and scanned the checks I'd saved in an old kitchen drawer. The tedious work felt almost comforting. Each document had a date. Each date belonged to a fact, not an accusation.
That afternoon Elaine called from her attorney's office.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I should've told you when I first saw the forged transfer."
"Why didn't you?"
"They threatened to have my brother fired and blame me for missing payroll. I convinced myself I needed a week to find proof. Then they took my laptop."
"Who knew about the storage unit?"
"Vanessa. And Daniel."
I pictured Pike standing in the doorway of Unit Twelve.
"Elaine, where's the blue folder?"
"I didn't leave it in storage," she said. "I gave it to the one person Margaret never suspected."
"Who?"
May you like
Elaine hesitated. "Your daughter."
I looked toward Sophie's bedroom, where a red gift box sat untouched on the floor.
