Chapter 13 - A Brother’s Confession

Daniel came to Nina's office without his mother. He looked older than he had on Christmas Eve, like someone who'd slept in his clothes for a week.

Nina put a recorder on the table and told him this was a voluntary conversation, not a deal. He nodded.

"I authorized transfers I knew were dishonest," he said. "Mom called them temporary loans. I let her convince me Claire would be better off never knowing."

"Who signed my name?" I asked.

Daniel swallowed. "I did."

I had imagined that answer for days. Hearing it hurt more than I expected.

"And Vanessa?"

"She signed as a witness because she believed you had given me permission. When she found out, she threatened to report us. Mom told her she'd lose her job and her home."

Nina asked him to describe the loan. He did, including the online credentials, the emails redirected to Margaret's address, and Pike's role in intimidating Elaine.

"You understand you're describing possible crimes," Nina said.

"I do."

I watched his hands. They were the same hands that had taught Sophie to ride a bicycle, the same hands that had typed my name into a fraudulent document.

"Why are you telling us now?" I asked.

"Sophie asked me why I didn't tell you. I kept hearing her voice."

"You should've listened when the grown-ups were telling you the same thing."

He nodded. "I should have."

After the meeting, Daniel asked whether Sophie might someday forgive him.

"That's her decision," I said. "And it will depend on what you do, not what you promise."

Nina filed the new statements and contacted the lender. An investigator requested the original server logs. The court set an emergency hearing on the foreclosure request.

That evening, Margaret called me for the first time without using Daniel as a messenger.

"You've made your point," she said. "We can settle this quietly."

"There is nothing quiet about forging a mother's name and threatening her child."

Her voice became thin. "Daniel is all I have left."

"He had a family. You helped him destroy it."

Then she said something that made me grip the phone tighter.

"Claire, you think I did this because I wanted the money. You have no idea who was about to come for us."
